hello doll!

your fifth month has been full of so many milestones that we are both excited for you, yet wishing time would slow down.  it seems like you are checking off your milestones at such a fast rate these days that you are becoming a new person every single day.  i read a quote the other day that said we shouldn’t let our little ones fall asleep, because every time we do they wake up older.  that’s how i feel about you right now.  every morning you are a whole new lady, growing too fast for mama’s liking!

at 5 months old you are sleeping through the night in your own room.  august 28th was your very first night in your own room and you love your crib.  you, your daddy and i have a wonderful bedtime routine of pajamas, feeding and stories every single night before kissing your cheeks goodnight a million times and wishing you only the happiest dreams.  you fall asleep amazingly and have been sleeping for 12 hours straight.  every rare once in awhile you will wake in the middle of the night for a feed, but i am only too happy to see you because i miss you so much with all of this sleep!

because you are now in your own room, mama went on a redecorating frenzy with all things pink.  your daddy came home one day a completely different nursery and one happy mama and baby.  we had a lot of fun shopping for pink things between naps and putting new things around your room.  we even picked up some floral pajamas and new night night books for our already overflowing library.

on the morning of august 30th, i walked into your room to find you had rolled over from your back to your tummy during the night!  i was so excited for you and, ever since, you have been a tummy sleeper.  once we lay you down in your crib on your back, you are flipped onto your tummy with your thumb in your mouth before we even get to your bedroom door.  we love watching you sleep, especially when you curl your legs under you and stick your little bum in the air.  it’s probably one of the cutest things we have ever seen.  then, 10 days later, you taught yourself how to roll from your tummy to your back…a milestone you aren’t supposed to master until 6 months.  you little over achiever, you.

aside from being such a wonderful sleeper, you have achieved so much during your awake hours too!  you have discovered your toes and love to grab your feet, especially during diaper changing.  you like to put the bottoms of your feet together and it looks like you are praying with your feet.  your right leg is always busy, you really like to kick it around and you look like a little ballerina when you do it.  you love laying on your activity mat now and entertain yourself for about 45 minutes as you look at yourself in the mirror, pull the owl to make him hoot, and bat at the dangling toys.  i am amazed at how independent and patient you are now.  you can play and be happy all on your own, all the while smiling away.

speaking of smiling, you are such a happy little lady!  you smile whenever anyone looks at you, especially mama and daddy.  when you see one of the puppies, you smile even bigger!  you just love your puppies and love to watch them play and pet them when they are close enough.  pretty soon you will be just as fast as they are, i’m sure of it.  they love you just as much and, every once in awhile, i will find them in your room while you are sleeping.  i guess they miss you as much as we do when you sleep.  whenever they hear you wake up from nap time, riley runs up the stairs behind me and races to the crib, poking his nose through the slats to see you.  you give him the biggest smile when he pokes you with his nose and it darn near melts my heart each and every time.

you love to take car rides now and don’t make a single peep throughout the ride, unless it’s happy squeals and baby babble.  no tears anymore in the car!  we try and take one outing a day, most of the time to target or to the mall.  you love riding in your stroller and looking at all the things, you are definitely a curious baby.  we took our first trip to daddy’s work this month to have a lunch date with him and meet all of his coworkers.  last time they saw mama, you were kicking away in my belly and now you are charming the hallways of daddy’s office and making everyone squeal when they see you.  daddy smiled with pride as he held you throughout lunch and showed off his two ladies to his office friends.  we even wore matching skinny jeans and flowy tops, which daddy thought was adorable.  we just love him and he didn’t mind one bit that you drooled all over his suit.

we have been convinced you will be a ballerina when you grow up because you stand assisted with such poise, with your little toes pointed out, your back perfectly straight and head held high.  a couple days ago you started doing the ronde jambe, where you point out your right toe, touch it to your left knee and kick out.  you do it a zillion times in a row, further convincing us that you will be in a pink tutu soon.

as we have been watching you drool and drool, we’ve been anticipating a tooth.  and two days ago your first tooth broke through!  mama was so surprised because you didn’t make a single fuss…all of a sudden it was there!  your first tooth is on the bottom front right and it’s just peeking through the gums.  i felt it before i saw it and, of course, had to call your daddy immediately at work.  he was so darn excited that he barely made it through the door after work that night, exclaiming, “let’s see your tooth!”  after we put you to bed that night, we opened up a really nice bottle of wine to celebrate another milestone from our perfect little lady.  of course, mama got a little teary.  you’re just growing so fast!

the next step for you is…solids!  your weight gain has slowed a little as you began sleeping through the night so your pediatrician recommended we start solids when you seem interested.  you looked a little too long at my banana the other morning and daddy thinks you are ready to go!  there is a high chair assembled in the dining room and mama ordered a zillion baby cookbooks that arrived in the mail to teach us about what yummy purees to make for you.  the baby spoons have been strictly scrutinized and purchased, the perfect bib has been picked out and monogrammed, and the camera battery is charged in preparation for your first experience with food.

while smiling with mama and daddy is surely your favorite, you also have a few favorite toys.  you love to chew on your honest company butterfly teether and, even though you refuse to take a paci (which mama is thrilled over), you love your little lamb.  while mama makes dinner, you love to chew on ellie and your wooden teether and perfect your ronde jambe.  it’s all about chewing these days!

from your sweet little bows to your tiny little ballerina toes, you are perfect.  when God made you, he put in a sprinkle of kindness, a dash of happiness, lots of curiosity, and loads of cuteness and charm.  daddy and i agree that God put an extra dose of cute in the mix when he made you because everyone agrees that you are just a beautiful little girl.

i can hear you babbling away in your crib, making it time for a little lunch and an outing!  we love you so much, sometimes it hurts.  you are more than we ever dreamed and prayed for and we never imagined our family being this happy and content.  every morning we are excited to begin another day of adventures with you and every night we are sad when you go to sleep as we know you will wake up a day older.  sometimes we just watch you sleep and talk about how amazing you are.  yes, we are those parents.  but you are.  you are perfectly amazing, beautiful, full of joy and you make up our entire world.  this is life as we know it.  and it’s pretty awesome.

we can’t wait to start another amazing month with you and can’t imagine what you will accomplish in the next 30 days.  we love you, doll!

love, mama
