Photographing Fatherhood : 5 Must Have Photos of Dads With Their Kids

i think one of the sweetest things to photograph is fatherhood.  there is something so real and honest about children and fathers; their bond and relationship is something that is so unique to the two of them.  just like mothers have a special bond with their children, fathers do too.  and it is something that’s important to document in photographs.  as you are photographing fatherhood, here are 5 must have photos that you must take.

1. Their Embrace

there is something so sweet about the way a father holds his child.  not matter their age, photographing how a father embraces his child can create a very special photo.  even better, try to incorporate how the child holds their dad back.  in the photo above, i love how she reaches for his collar and holds onto it when her daddy embraces here.  it’s a good reminder that memories are made in the little details.

2.  How He Helps

just like anything, there are things that mommies tend to do and things that daddies tend to do, in terms of parenting.  in our house, my husband is in charge of bath time and he also always buckles her into her carseat when we head out on the family outing.  this is because he usually drives and her carseat is on the driver’s side, making it a habit for daddy to buckle her in.  no matter the chore, be sure to photograph what your husband does normally to help out.  what is his daddy duty that helps the family out?

3. How He Teaches Them

an important part of photographing fatherhood is photographing how your husband teaches your child.  whether this is riding at bike or learning to walk, be sure to photograph the ways that your child learns from their father.  teaching our children new things, whether big or small, is such an important part of being a parent and can be a really fun thing to memorialize in a photograph.

4.  How He Makes Them Laugh

there is nothing better than hearing your child laugh, which means we will do just about anything to hear that sweet sound.  photograph how your husband makes your child laugh.  while your child may laugh at you when you make silly faces, they might laugh with their dad when he tickles them or chases them down the hall.  photograph what laughter looks like for your child, especially when it comes to their interaction with their dad.

5. Candid Moments that Show Love

there is nothing more cherished than a photo of a parent and their child showing love.  be sure to keep your camera out regularly and pick it up to photograph the candid moments that occur between father and child.  photographing fatherhood is done best when it is candid and true, so do your best to allow the scene to play out and not interfere.  for many, candid photographs end up being their most cherished images because they resemble such raw and true emotion.
