hello doll!
your fifth month has been full of so many milestones that we are both excited for you, yet wishing time would slow down. it seems like you are checking off your milestones at such a fast rate these days that you are becoming a new person every single day. i read a quote the other day that said we shouldn’t let our little ones fall asleep, because every time we do they wake up older. that’s how i feel about you right now. every morning you are a whole new lady, growing too fast for mama’s liking!
at 5 months old you are sleeping through the night in your own room. august 28th was your very first night in your own room and you love your crib. you, your daddy and i have a wonderful bedtime routine of pajamas, feeding and stories every single night before kissing your cheeks goodnight a million times and wishing you only the happiest dreams. you fall asleep amazingly and have been sleeping for 12 hours straight. every rare once in awhile you will wake in the middle of the night for a feed, but i am only too happy to see you because i miss you so much with all of this sleep!
because you are now in your own room, mama went on a redecorating frenzy with all things pink. your daddy came home one day a completely different nursery and one happy mama and baby. we had a lot of fun shopping for pink things between naps and putting new things around your room. we even picked up some floral pajamas and new night night books for our already overflowing library.
on the morning of august 30th, i walked into your room to find you had rolled over from your back to your tummy during the night! i was so excited for you and, ever since, you have been a tummy sleeper. once we lay you down in your crib on your back, you are flipped onto your tummy with your thumb in your mouth before we even get to your bedroom door. we love watching you sleep, especially when you curl your legs under you and stick your little bum in the air. it’s probably one of the cutest things we have ever seen. then, 10 days later, you taught yourself how to roll from your tummy to your back…a milestone you aren’t supposed to master until 6 months. you little over achiever, you.
aside from being such a wonderful sleeper, you have achieved so much during your awake hours too! you have discovered your toes and love to grab your feet, especially during diaper changing. you like to put the bottoms of your feet together and it looks like you are praying with your feet. your right leg is always busy, you really like to kick it around and you look like a little ballerina when you do it. you love laying on your activity mat now and entertain yourself for about 45 minutes as you look at yourself in the mirror, pull the owl to make him hoot, and bat at the dangling toys. i am amazed at how independent and patient you are now. you can play and be happy all on your own, all the while smiling away.
speaking of smiling, you are such a happy little lady! you smile whenever anyone looks at you, especially mama and daddy. when you see one of the puppies, you smile even bigger! you just love your puppies and love to watch them play and pet them when they are close enough. pretty soon you will be just as fast as they are, i’m sure of it. they love you just as much and, every once in awhile, i will find them in your room while you are sleeping. i guess they miss you as much as we do when you sleep. whenever they hear you wake up from nap time, riley runs up the stairs behind me and races to the crib, poking his nose through the slats to see you. you give him the biggest smile when he pokes you with his nose and it darn near melts my heart each and every time.
you love to take car rides now and don’t make a single peep throughout the ride, unless it’s happy squeals and baby babble. no tears anymore in the car! we try and take one outing a day, most of the time to target or to the mall. you love riding in your stroller and looking at all the things, you are definitely a curious baby. we took our first trip to daddy’s work this month to have a lunch date with him and meet all of his coworkers. last time they saw mama, you were kicking away in my belly and now you are charming the hallways of daddy’s office and making everyone squeal when they see you. daddy smiled with pride as he held you throughout lunch and showed off his two ladies to his office friends. we even wore matching skinny jeans and flowy tops, which daddy thought was adorable. we just love him and he didn’t mind one bit that you drooled all over his suit.
we have been convinced you will be a ballerina when you grow up because you stand assisted with such poise, with your little toes pointed out, your back perfectly straight and head held high. a couple days ago you started doing the ronde jambe, where you point out your right toe, touch it to your left knee and kick out. you do it a zillion times in a row, further convincing us that you will be in a pink tutu soon.
as we have been watching you drool and drool, we’ve been anticipating a tooth. and two days ago your first tooth broke through! mama was so surprised because you didn’t make a single fuss…all of a sudden it was there! your first tooth is on the bottom front right and it’s just peeking through the gums. i felt it before i saw it and, of course, had to call your daddy immediately at work. he was so darn excited that he barely made it through the door after work that night, exclaiming, “let’s see your tooth!” after we put you to bed that night, we opened up a really nice bottle of wine to celebrate another milestone from our perfect little lady. of course, mama got a little teary. you’re just growing so fast!
the next step for you is…solids! your weight gain has slowed a little as you began sleeping through the night so your pediatrician recommended we start solids when you seem interested. you looked a little too long at my banana the other morning and daddy thinks you are ready to go! there is a high chair assembled in the dining room and mama ordered a zillion baby cookbooks that arrived in the mail to teach us about what yummy purees to make for you. the baby spoons have been strictly scrutinized and purchased, the perfect bib has been picked out and monogrammed, and the camera battery is charged in preparation for your first experience with food.
while smiling with mama and daddy is surely your favorite, you also have a few favorite toys. you love to chew on your honest company butterfly teether and, even though you refuse to take a paci (which mama is thrilled over), you love your little lamb. while mama makes dinner, you love to chew on ellie and your wooden teether and perfect your ronde jambe. it’s all about chewing these days!
from your sweet little bows to your tiny little ballerina toes, you are perfect. when God made you, he put in a sprinkle of kindness, a dash of happiness, lots of curiosity, and loads of cuteness and charm. daddy and i agree that God put an extra dose of cute in the mix when he made you because everyone agrees that you are just a beautiful little girl.
i can hear you babbling away in your crib, making it time for a little lunch and an outing! we love you so much, sometimes it hurts. you are more than we ever dreamed and prayed for and we never imagined our family being this happy and content. every morning we are excited to begin another day of adventures with you and every night we are sad when you go to sleep as we know you will wake up a day older. sometimes we just watch you sleep and talk about how amazing you are. yes, we are those parents. but you are. you are perfectly amazing, beautiful, full of joy and you make up our entire world. this is life as we know it. and it’s pretty awesome.
we can’t wait to start another amazing month with you and can’t imagine what you will accomplish in the next 30 days. we love you, doll!
love, mama

being able to create beautiful and honest images is our job as lifestyle newborn photographers. but in order to create images in the best way that we can, we have to make sure that we are in the best environment. we need to make sure we set up our sessions successfully so they run as smoothly as possible. being a lifestyle newborn photographer, i take pictures in client’s homes. this means that every session allows me to photograph in a brand new environment that i have never photographed in before. while this has it’s challenges, i have found that having clear communication before session day really makes or breaks my success with in home lifestyle sessions. i am adamant about having clear communication with my clients before their session to ensure that i, and they, know exactly what to expect once i arrive at their home. to be as prepared as you can, here are 6 questions to ask before lifestyle newborn sessions.

6 Questions To Ask Before Lifestyle Newborn Sessions
.jpg)
when thinking about what questions to ask before lifestyle newborn sessions, i thought of all the things that would make me nervous for the session. if i am nervous about it, i want to be prepared so i know what to expect or so i can prepare myself better. without fail, i ask the following 6 questions before my lifestyle newborn sessions and it makes photographing the session not only less stressful, but so much more successful.
.jpg)
Question #1 : When Is It The Brightest In Your Home?
because i am a natural light photographer, light is always my biggest concern. since i don’t use flash or artificial light of any kind, i am completely reliant on the natural light of my client’s home. being successful with natural light is so easy, if you just ask the question. after choosing a date with my client, i have my client watch the light in their home for me to help determine the best time of day to schedule their photos to be taken.
after deciding what rooms we will photograph in, i have my client turn off the lights in those rooms and watch the light over the course of a couple days. i have them note when it is naturally the brightest in the room without any sunshine physically coming into the room on the walls or floors. usually clients find that the early afternoon is the brightest, but light is different in every home. knowing when the light is the best helps to ensure that i can create the bright and soft images that reflect my photography style.

Question #2 : Do you need help with wardrobe?
most of my clients tell me upon hiring that they love how honest and bright my newborn photography is. what people don’t realize is that wardrobe can play a huge role in the tone of photographs. i always offer wardrobe help with clients by recommending that they only wear soft neutrals like whites, creams and light grays. i explain the importance of avoiding bright tones and how it can create unnatural skin tones on their baby through color casts. i also send them a pinterest board that i created just for newborn clients, giving examples of what photographs well. pinterest boards with wardrobe examples can be very helpful for clients, as it’s very visual.
for additional inspiration on how clients should dress their newborn, check out my post on how to dress your baby.

Question #3 : Does your newborn have siblings?
if there are siblings to incorporate into the photos, it is very important that i know that ahead of time so i can not only prep posing, but so i know how to structure my session. my session flows differently when siblings are involved, as i like to photograph them first so that siblings can be photographed and finished quickly to avoid combating behavior later in the session.
for more tips on how to incorporate siblings into newborn sessions, check out my 8 tips for photographing newborns with siblings.
.jpg)
Question #4 : What’s your feeding schedule?
among the questions to ask before lifestyle newborn sessions, i always ask about feedings. because most newborns are on an “on demand” feeding schedule, i build more time into the session for feeding breaks. it is always easier to stop and feed a baby than to try and photograph one who is fussy. in the long run, it’s quicker to stop and feed. while my clients know that i am flexible with feedings throughout the session, i do request that they feed their newborn right before i arrive for their session. feeding their newborn right before i arrive helps calm and prepare them for the session, allowing us to start photographing right away to make the most of our time together.
.jpg)
Question #5 : Is your nursery set up?
before my lifestyle newborn sessions, i like to prepare my clients for what areas in their home i will be photographing in. this ensures that those spaces are clean and photo ready once i arrive, as i never want a client to be surprised or stressed about the state of a room. when discussing their upcoming session, i tell my clients that i generally focus on photos in the master bedroom and nursery, if set up, and around window light. this gives the client an idea of what rooms they should have ready to go, and what rooms they don’t need to stress about having photo ready.
because i give full disclosure on where i will be photographing in my clients home, it is up to my client to have those rooms ready. from time to time, i will help declutter a nightstand that will be in the photo or move a piece of furniture that is unbalancing my photo. but most of the time, clear communication about what rooms i will be in fully prepares clients to have their home photo ready.
.jpg)
Question #6 : Do you have any “must have” photos?
while my clients always give me artistic freedom to photograph their newborn, sometimes they request a particular photo from my portfolio that they have seen me do before. because my clients hire me because they have fallen in love with my work, i be sure to ask if there was a particular photo of mine that they really wanted me to do. i always like to ask this because sometimes clients have a particular baby announcement in mind and want a particular photo that will work well with that, such as a close up of the baby’s face. it’s always better to ask the client and incorporate their wishes into the session that to have a client wishing they had a particular photo.
to ensure that client’s are requesting photos that reflect my photography style, i send them a pinterest board of my newborn portfolio to pin for inspiration. this minimizes clients pinning images from other photographers, which places unrealistic expectations on me and my photography style.
having clear communication and knowing as much about my clients as i can prior to my lifestyle newborn sessions make my sessions run so smoothly and make my images that much more successful. when thinking about what questions to ask before lifestyle newborn sessions, think of any potential surprises you might encounter on the day of the session and clarify before booking. it’s always better to know too much than too little and be as prepared as you can.
What Photography Gear To Bring
and because i know you are probably wondering about my gear, here is a little peek into what i bring with me.
i always carry my wide angle lenses, the sigma art 24mm f/1.4 lens and the nikon 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 lens. having a wide angle lens allows me to fit more of the surroundings of my clients home, as well as more people, inside of the frame. the purpose of lifestyle newborn sessions is to document families within their home, so having a wide angle lens is a key factor in doing that. i also bring my sigma 50mm f/1.4 lens, as it is perfect for both family and individual portraits. it’s low aperture also allows me to get some detailed photos of the baby, surrounded by soft bokeh. because i photograph my lifestyle newborn sessions with more than one lens, i carry two camera bodies, my nikon d750 and nikon d610 so that i can have a lens on each camera body and reduce wasting time by switching out lenses.
lastly, i find it helpful to bring a tripod. this allows me to set up my shot where i would like it, while allowing me to run back and forth between my clients and my camera. when photographing newborns with siblings, i find that i am constantly running towards the client to get my older sibling posed just right, then running back to capture the moment. having a tripod helps ensure that my shot is always set up where i want it, despite my movement. having a tripod also helps combat low light scenarios, as it helps to steady my camera and allow me to keep my shutter open longer without camera shake.

6 Photography Business Habits That Get You Rehired
.jpg)
our goals as photographers are to not only create beautiful photos for our clients, but to create an experience for them that wants them coming back for more. instead of having them search for google when it’s time to update their family photos, you want them searching for your business card. there are 6 principles that i have built my photography business around that have not only made my business very successful, but have created long lasting positive impressions with my clients. and instead of being a one time photographer, i have become a family photographer who gets rehired time and time again. keep these tips in mind to help create a photography business that has long term success.
.jpg)
1. Create an Experience
for most families, the idea of getting their portraits taken is quite stressful. besides capturing wonderful moments with my camera, my main goal is to create a fun experience for my clients so they enjoy their time in front of the camera. this not only helps to get genuine emotion in my images, but the clients will look back on their images and associate them with a fun experience. they will replace that feeling of stress and anxiety with a more positive feeling, encouraging them to rehire you for another positive experience when it is time to update their portraits. in order for you to photograph a family making a fun memory, it’s important that you create one for them.
ways you can do this is by simply having fun with your clients. take them to a new location that would interest them and allow them to have fun within their surroundings. encourage them to play games, laugh, and tickle one another. all of these things help to not only relax the client and make them feel more comfortable in front of the camera, but to create images that have honest emotion.
one of my very favorite sources for posing inspiration is the design aglow posing guide for family portrait photography.
.jpg)
2. Don’t Offer Mini Sessions
in my opinion, mini sessions are one of the worst things you can do for your photography business. first of all, you are paying yourself less to do the same work, even if you are offering less images or a shorter session. second of all, you are attracting the wrong client. mini sessions attract clients who only want a deal. and next year when they are looking to hire a photographer again, they are going to be searching for a deal first and foremost. for me and my photography style, full length sessions are necessary to not only create an experience for my client but to give me time to have some fun and create honest images with them. it’s not something that can be done in a 15 minute session, but instead i like to take my time with my clients and not make them feel rushed.
set your pricing and stand by it. the customers who truly love your work will pay for it. and those are the customers you want anyways because they will help you achieve your photography style as they are invested in it just as much as you are.
.jpg)
3. Maintain A Consistent Photography Style
the reason why clients hire you initially is because they love your work. the reason why they hire you again is because…they still love your work. be sure that you are always being consistent with your photography style, as it will help you attract clients and then keep them. if you are a photographer who has a clear photography style, your clients know exactly what they are going to get by hiring you, and they will be satisfied in the end because you will deliver what they expect. however, if you are a photography who photographs differently during each session, your portfolio is going to be too diverse, leaving potential clients wondering what they will even get by hiring you.
if you are a photographer that focuses on capturing candid moments with your clients, do it and do it all of the time. this will ensure that the clients who hire you know what to expect from you, and also ensures that they will be happy with their final images because it’s what they hired you to do.
if you are struggling with finding a unique photography style that represents you and your business, be sure to check out my eBook “The Styled Photographer.”
.jpg)
4. Be Personable and Build Trust
you represent yourself and your business from the very first email a client sends you. i firmly believe that the client’s session begins way before the session day. it is your job to build trust with your client from the moment you are introduced. be personable with your client as you are choosing a location, a date, and confirming their session. build trust in them by offering additional services before the session like wardrobe advisement. helping clients decide what to wear to their session not only helps reduce the client’s stress, but it shows them that you care enough about their photos that you are willing to put in some time to show them what photographs the best. building trust also means following up with your client before the session, by way of sending session reminders and encouraging communication if questions are to arise.
.jpg)
5. Don’t Do What You Say, Do More
if you tell your client you are going to do something, do it better than they could imagine. for me, i do this in two main ways. even though i tell my client that it will take me two weeks to edit their collection, i edit and deliver their images within less than a week. this is not only impressive to my client, but the surprise is lovely for them. when a client leaves my session, they are already thinking about how their images are going to look so i don’t want them wondering for long, i love to show them right away. another way that i do more for my client is by editing extra images for them, for free. even though i quote 20 final images, i always throw in extra images for my clients. this is not only a great way to say thank you for a wonderful session, but it shows my clients that i care enough about their memories that i want them to have all of them, not just a certain number. clients remember little things like faster delivery times and free extras. and to be honest, it takes very little time to do these little gestures.
.jpg)
6. Send An Annual Reminder
every august, before the busy fall season begins, i send emails to my existing clients to remind them that it’s time to schedule a time to update their family portraits. my clients love the reminder because, being summer, it’s something they haven’t thought of quite yet. they are glad that you are willing to get them on the calendar while there are many dates to choose from instead of rushing to find a spot when they eventually remember it’s time to schedule. allowing existing clients to choose session dates before opening up my calendar to the public is a gesture that clients appreciate, and it makes them feel special. it shows them that you care about their family and want to see them again this year.
successful photographers book clients, but really successful photographers rebook clients. you know that you are doing it right when your clients choose you again and again. your goal is to be the photographer your clients turn to no matter what time of year and no matter what occasion. try implementing these 6 photography business habits to help transition yourself from a one time photographer to you client’s official family photographer.

deciding on what your baby should wear for their newborn photo session has never been easier…keep it simple. while i am sure you have spent months building a dream closet for your tiny baby, as a photographer there is nothing worse than having a baby too dressed up for a newborn photo session. the purpose of newborn photos is to document your newborn and all their tiny features. even though newborn clothing is so much fun, it can detract from the purpose of the session and be too distracting in the final portraits. when planning how to dress your baby for your newborn session, remember the following 5 tips.

Newborn Photo Session: How To Dress Your Baby
.jpg)
while the first weeks with your newborn can be a little overwhelming, your newborn photo session should be something you look forward to. your baby will be getting their first professional portraits taken and you will cherish these photos for the rest of your life. while many parents stress about getting everything just right for the session, choosing what your baby wears is super easy. don’t overthink it, just keep these 5 tips in mind.
.jpg)
1. Keep It Simple
while frilly dresses on girls and collared shirts with suspenders on boys are darling, they are way too much for a newborn session. even though these items are adorable, they are also high maintenance and will cause you to fuss over straightening collars, pulling up pants and straightening dresses throughout the entire session. it will drive both you and your photographer crazy! fussing over clothing is also very frustrating for your baby, creating a stressful environment during your session that will negatively impact your final photos.
a basic onesie is the very best outfit for a newborn session and i recommend it to every newborn client i photograph. yes, it’s that simple. not only is the onesie easy and low mainenance, but it showcases your newborn’s small body. the whole idea of getting newborn portraits taken is to document how tiny they are, so onesies are absolutely perfect for this. babies tend to get lost in dresses, jeans, and sweaters so opt for the simple onesie and you will be amazed and how well your baby photographs while wearing it.
.jpg)
2. Avoid Loud Prints On Clothing
prints are something that tend to be a fad, so avoid using them when dressing your baby. when deciding on an outfit, a basic white onesie is something that is classic and timeless. it’s something that won’t make you cringe in 30 years when your grown children are looking back on their first portraits. while prints on the baby’s outfit should be avoided, incorporate them in other ways like through the use of a swaddle. the wonderful thing about a printed swaddle is that it can easily be put into or taken out of the photo, without having to undress the baby, which can upset them.
willowee sent me this beautiful swaddle when my little baby girl arrived and it’s one of our favorites because it is so soft and the print is so darling. i love that i can easily wrap her in the swaddle for a couple photos to incorporate color and print, then easily take it off for the rest of my portraits.

3. Dress Up With Accessories
if you are a girl mama like me, chances are you love how cute your little one looks in headbands. baby headbands are the subtle and classic way of dressing up your baby. by keeping it simple with a basic onesie, you are allowing the headband to be the dress up factor and make a statement. cammi and co sent me some of their stunning headbands for my little girl and they are honestly the best headbands i have ever used. i love that the base is nylon, making it both soft and comfortable for the baby, while being neutral and allowing the bow to be the focal point. these headbands photograph beautifully and are a must have for all baby girls.
.jpg)
4. Forget the Shoes
don’t even worry about finding a pair of shoes for your baby to wear during their newborn photo session because your photographer will want to take them off. there is nothing like tiny baby toes to document the small size of newborns and they are one of the most photographable things your photographer will focus on. plus, shoes imply a maturity that looks odd on a baby and the main focus of a newborn session is to document your baby’s brand newness and how young they are. there is nothing more innocent than bare feet. save the shoes for another occasion and let your photographer gush over those baby toes!
5. Keep it Neutral
this goes for both the baby and the parents…keep it neutral. focus on neutral colors such as whites, creams and grays. avoid dark colors like black, as it provides such an unflattering contrast compared to newborn skin and doesn’t photograph well. it’s also really important to avoid bright colors in general as they create color casts on the skin. color casts occur when bright colors are bounced off of neutral surfaces. for example, if you are wearing a bright green shirt and holding a baby, the green color will reflect off of the baby’s skin and therefore make the baby appear to have a greenish tint to them.
it’s really important that both your baby and you wear neutral tones, as they photograph so well and allow us to capture that sweet pink newborn skin. by dressing your baby in white, cream, or gray, you are also ensuring that their skin photographs accurately without harsh and unnatural color casts.
you will look back on photos from your newborn photo session for years to come, so dressing your baby in the most successful way for photographs is really important. remember, just keep it simple. if you have a meaningful item of clothing that you really want your little one photographed in, your photographer will most likely be willing to accommodate your request for a photo or two, but know that simple clothing is what will create the best newborn portraits. it’s all about the baby anyways, right?

getting your family photos taken is something that is so exciting, but can turn stressful in a second! you want everyone to be wearing the right clothes and behaving properly, all the while looking great in the pictures. having been a lifestyle family photographer for a few years, i am always the one behind the camera instead of in front of it. so when my husband and a decided to have courtney slazinik of click it up a notch take our portraits last fall in celebration of getting pregnant, it was a little different for me to be the subject instead of the photographer. being in front of the camera taught me a lot about what my clients experience and, having experienced getting family picture done, i now have 8 tips for getting family photos taken.

8 Tips For Getting Family Photos Taken
.jpg)
all of the photos in this post were taken by the beautifully talented courtney slazinik of click it up a notch.
1. Trust Your Photographer
being in front of the camera can be a little nerve wracking! and for me, i would rather be behind the camera telling people what to do, than to be in front of it. when getting family photos taken, remember that is is natural to feel a little nervous and embarrassed at the beginning of the session. everyone feels the same way, it’s normal! knowing this, trust your photographer and know that he or she will help you through the process. because they are behind the camera and can see the photo as a whole, your photographer will tell you when to move your arm or tilt your head just a bit more. relax and trust that they will help you look great. the key word being: relax. if you feel stressed inside, you will look stressed in your photos.
need some help getting your clients comfortable in front of the camera? check out my 8 tips for photographing natural family photographs.
2. Think Through Your Wardrobe
many people don’t realize how much their clothing choice affects the style and tone of their photos. think about how you want your photos to feel and look, then base your clothing choices around those concepts. if you are looking for exciting and vibrant images, your clothing choices will probably include bright colored clothing. for me, i like my photos to match my home decor so that they naturally flow on my walls. because my home is more soft and neutral, i choose to base our wardrobe around more neutral tones. when in doubt, look around your home for style inspiration.
.jpg)
3. Schedule Around Behavior
if you have children, be sure to schedule your session for a time when your children tend to be on their best behavior, like after a nap or in the morning. scheduling a session during a time when your child normally naps or during a time of day when they are generally more tired isn’t the best idea, as you will be combating behavior throughout your entire session. yes, most photographers love to schedule photos to be taken during golden hour, which is an hour after sunrise or an hour before sunset. the reality is…those times of day aren’t the best for every child and some children aren’t at their best during those times. think of it this way, if you are going to spend money hiring a photographer and buying new clothes, schedule your session for a time when your children are the happiest. there is no use spending all of that money and doing all that planning to have cranky kids in your pictures.
.jpg)
4. Don’t Overbook Your Session Day
on the day of your session, be sure you don’t make too many additional plans. keep the day relaxed so you don’t wear out your children nor yourself and so everyone is calm going into the session. for example, if you have company coming into town and your son has a baseball game the morning of your session, that may put too much distracting stress on your family. schedule your photos for a day when you have no additional plans or distractions to ensure that you have plenty of time to get to and from your session.
.jpg)
5. Plan to Arrive 15 Minutes Early
there is nothing like traffic or having to turn around because you forgot your daughter’s shoes to put stress on your family before getting family photos taken. and trust me, the stress of that 5th red light that you hit on the way to your session will show on your face in your pictures. plan on arriving 15 minutes before your session to ensure you have plenty of time to travel to your session and relax before it begins.
arriving early also helps your children because you can walk around the location and get your children comfortable before the camera comes out. sometimes children just need to familiarize themselves with their new environment to help encourage comfort and confidence for the photos. when everyone is relaxed and comfortable, your photographer will have an easier time capturing natural and honest photos of your family instead of spending time relaxing everyone.

6. Be Yourself
once the camera comes out, be yourself. and more importantly, let your children be themselves. family portraits are all about capturing the honest moments that make up your family. let your kids be your kids, silly faces and all. trust me, in the years ahead you will be so thankful that your photographer captured your true family instead of a nervous looking deer in the headlights looking family all staring blankly at the camera. don’t be intimidated when your kids become lively, your photographer will love capturing their personalities. now, this is all within reason. by all means, bribe your kids to ensure that they behave themselves. i am not saying a wild pack of monkeys makes great photos, only that a little personality doesn’t hurt.
when in comes to children, their comfort while getting family photos taken is important. allow them to bring their favorite stuffed animal or their blankie. while you may not want this item in every single photo, sometimes a little comfort between takes is all your little on may need to keep them cooperative during the session.

7. Have Expectations, But Respect Your Photographer
it’s okay to let your photographer know if you there are a few particular photos you would really like when you are getting family photos taken, it can be helpful for them to know that ahead of time. on the flip side, respect your photographer. you hired them for a reason…you love their work! respect their vision and do as they say, they know what they are doing. during our session, i let courtney know that i prefer photos where we aren’t looking at the camera, a more candid approach. i love that she incorporated my wishes as she was photographing, while also capturing a few amazing portraits of us looking at the camera as well.

8. Smile. All the time.
as a photographer, i will be the first to tell you that some of my favorite photos i have ever taken of clients are the ones between takes, the candid ones. i always tell my clients to smile all the time because i will be taking pictures non stop. when you are in front of the camera, it is fair game! make sure you are smiling all the time, for you never know when one of those in between moments is going to be your favorite photo. if you have little ones, let your photographer worry about getting smiles of out them. there is nothing worse than having a photo of a child that is smiling, only to see the parents both frowning in the picture because they were trying to elicit a smile behind the scenes. just smile, look at the camera, and allow your photographer to help get the smiles out of your little ones. to be truthful, your kids are more likely to smile for the photographer than you anyways because they are someone knew to look at!
getting family photos taken is something that is so special. if you are like me, all i want is my photos. i love my photos. i love that they visually and permanently document a time in my life that otherwise would have been a memory. remember that the purpose of family photos is to document the here and now, silly faces and all. by keeping these tips for getting your family photos taken in mind, you will help prepare yourself for a wonderful session that will result in beautiful memories framed on the walls of your home.
