oh, i am all about honestly so i will admit…when instagram stories first came out, i was super annoyed.  really?  like snapchat!?  but then i watched a few and, i have to say, i think they are pretty awesome.  and to continue being honest, i actually look forward to seeing new ones pop up on the top of my instagram feed.  it got me thinking how helpful video truly is for our society.  yes, sometimes videos are just plain silly and made for fun.  but other times, video can be an extremely helpful educational tool.  as photographers, we love sharing our talent and craft with others.  here are 5 ways that photographers can use instagram stories to share their passion for photography with their audience.

Instagram Stories: 5 Ways Photographers Can Create Them

1. Watch Me Edit

if there is one thing that i am fascinated by, it’s watching photographers edit.  how a photographer edits is such a personal and artistic choice, really giving the person watching a glimpse into their photography style.  try pulling up a photo in lightroom, walk your audience through how you edit it, and then post the final photo to your instagram feed.  your audience will not only love you for it, but learn a little more about you as an artist.

2. Show Pullbacks

are you on location for a photo session or simply arranging items on a table to be photographed?  grab your phone and take a video of what is happening behind the scenes.  your audience will be fascinated by your setup or the location you choose to use, and how you will portray your current surroundings through your camera frame.  be sure to post some photos on instagram that you took during your video so everyone can see what you achieved.

3. A Peek Into Your Camera Bag

one of the most common questions photographers get asked are “what camera do you shoot with?” and “what are your favorite lenses?”  instead of taking pictures and writing it all down, grab your phone and create a video.  bring out your camera bag and show us what’s inside!

4. Introduce Yourself

i know this sounds silly but, introduce yourself!  one of the best things about instagram stories is that we can hear one another’s voices!  after following some of my favorite photographers for years, i have always felt like i have gotten to know them through their photography.  instagram stories is just a different way to show your audience who you truly are and relate to your followers in a new way.

5. Capture What The Camera Can’t

let’s be real, there are just some times when the camera can’t capture the moment with the same emotion and excitement that a video can.  whether it is fireworks, your little one crawling for the first time, or watching someone open up a birthday gift, bring out your phone and capture a video to share with your followers.  let us get to know the real you through your voice, and not just your photography.

people follow you on instagram because they are interested in what you do, whether it is how you teach, inspire, or simply entertain them.  by using instagram stories, you are giving your audience a new glimpse into your life so have fun with it!  as always, what you post reflects you as a person and your business brand, so always keep this in mind by keeping your videos positive, fun and inspiring!
