because i am strictly a natural light lifestyle newborn photographer, i am at the mercy of the natural light in my client’s home. i photograph all of my newborn sessions sight unseen, making it important for me to know how to use the light i am given and make it work once i arrive at…

I am actually going to be finding myself in a very low light situation soon, but only in the bedroom. The rest of the spaces are not so great either, but I think I can work with them. I like that you recommend brining more lens than you need, and giving yourself options. I only have a 50mm 1.4 and a standard zoom, I may have to invest in another. Thanks for the helpful hints:o)
-
Good luck at your session, Mandi! You will do great! Your 50mm f/1.4 lens is a great lens, because it’s low aperture is great for low light!

I have a D750 too but have never been successful in low light with it. I always get noise, even at relatively low ISOs like 600 or 800. Got any idea what I might be doing wrong?
-
it’s important to note that noise is still very possible and inevitable. the most important way to combat noise when using higher ISOs is to ensure that you are nailing your exposure each and every time. if you are tweaking your exposure in post processing, you are adding noise. but if you are nailing your exposure in camera, you will have relatively low noise even with higher ISOs!

taking photographs is my passion. it’s my way of freezing those everyday moments in time so that i can look back on my photographs and instantly be taken back to the day, the setting and the experience. when my little girl was born, i became passionate about self portraits. i want her to have a…

Thank you so much for all of the great tips. I have attempted self-portraits with my babies before but they were almost all out of focus. I am going to try again today. Thanks again!

You are very welcome, Samantha! I hope this helps! So proud of you for trying again!

Thank you for this! I have really tried to get infront of the camera with my crew but set a 10 second timer and run like crazy! LOL! I have bought two remotes that have not worked. One of them you have to point directly at the camera for it to work which is a little obvious and the other didn’t connect to my camera. I have a Canon 5d markiii. I know you don’t have a Canon but can you recommend a remote that might work for that? I also didn’t know that you could set a continuous timer! I’m on vacation and wish I had my manual.
-
Yes, I am not Canon so I don’t have a recommendation. However, if you are using a continuous timer to get a series of photos then it is okay to use your remote that you have to point at the camera, as you will just throw out the first photo and the remaining photos will not have the remote visible since you can have time to hide it!

I had read this before, but I’m glad I remembered it was posted on here. After a bunch of failed attempts yesterday, and a few decent shots that were soft, this helped me figure out the one little thing I was doing wrong – not pressing the shutter button halfway before pressing it all the way for the self-time. This is a lifesaver! Now I can try again, and hopefully, get better pictures this time!

Thank you very much for sharing. I’ve did some of my first photo shoots since my early 20’s in the late 90s. Then stopped for a while and within recent years I’ve started doing them again. I was thinking to do another photo shoot, but then thought why don’t I try to do my own project and your article is very helpful. What type of lense did you use for the first two photos?
-
thanks so much, Kirsten! i am not seeing two photos within the post, but all the gear is listed within the post!

Mandi Korn - I feel like I am out of the loop when it comes to Social Media. I have no idea how to use any of it to my advantage and I actually never spend the time on it, so I guess I am the opposite of what you are posting about. All I have is a Facebook Page and Instagram…..not sure what else I need, maybe you can give me tips on that. Love your blog and photos.
{beth} a-dilly - I am only on Facebook and Instagram, as well. I am also on Pinterest, which has many advantages. Feel free to utilize my blog’s search bar on the top right to read more about social media, I have a few posts throughout my blog on how to utilize social media!
