sweet bambino to be,

we saw you again this morning during our 20 week ultrasound and you are…perfect.  perfectly perfect.  by the way you were kicking and waving, i know you were saying hello.  we fell in love with those sweet little fingers you were waving at us, and you darn near melted my heart.  to say it best, you are already the best thing that has ever happened to us and you haven’t even arrived yet.    weeks before we found out you were on your way, i knew you were there.  i just knew it.  i starting talking to you then and praying to some very special angels of mine that you would indeed be real.  and you were!

i think being your mommy was what i was made to do and i am so very excited for our adventures as a family of three to begin.  i feel like we know every little detail about you, from those perfect ten toes we saw this morning to the cutest little nose on your sweet face.  and soon you will know everything about us.  but until then, here’s a little something about your parents.

about me.  i am passionate about life and about our little family.  i like to think i’ve got it all together and that’s how i like it.   i am a planner.  i am fiercely organized.  i am most comfortable when everything is in it’s place.  but don’t worry, i can handle a tiny mess.  i can’t wait to have your little fingerprints lingering on the cabinet doors and to see little crumbs all over the floor because i know the most perfect thing made them.  now that you can hear us from in there you probably know that i love to be cuddled close, hot cups of {decaf} coffee dates are my favorite with your daddy, and that i can never hit that one note in that one eric church song when it plays on the radio…sorry about that.  the most important thing to know about me is that i am so in love with you already.  i love feeling your little kicks and bumps and when you fall asleep, i miss you already.

about your daddy.  what a hunk.  we are really lucky to have him, he is the best.  you are going to adore him, just like i do.  he is wonderfully patient and so very loyal and protective of our family.  he wants you to have the best of the best…you should have seen him comparing what stroller to get you.  and he will be able to teach you just about anything and answer any question you could ever have.  he is the calm in our family, the one you will want to run to if something is ever wrong.  he is a fixer and makes everything better, even if it’s simply with a hug.  to be so very honest, the best part about knowing you are coming is knowing that he is going to be your daddy.  he is going to be perfect at it.

about us.  by the time you arrive, we will have been married for 8 blissful years, but together for so many more.  God made us for one another.  when my first instinct is to panic (and i do panic), his first instinct is to hug and be calm.  and when he walks in from a long day, i already have a glass of wine waiting for him.  we are just that couple that gets one another and it’s really always been that way.  it’s just easy to be happy together, and it’s torture being apart.  from the first day we were married, your daddy has kissed me every single morning before i wake up and again it’s the first thing he does when he walks through the door after work.  you will be born into such a beautiful life, if only because your parents love one another so incredibly much.

about those puppies!  you have two puppy brothers who just adore you already.  from the moment you were you, they have loved cuddling my tummy.  i don’t think i lay down for more than a few moments before they curl up next to me and take turns listening to your sweet heart and feel your little kicks.

i can feel you kicking as i type, politely reminding me that it is lunchtime.  there is so much more that i want you to know, but there will be time for all of that.  and very soon i can tell you everything while i am cuddling you in my arms.  19 weeks and 4 more days to go until the best adventure yet begins.  and i think your daddy and i will both cry if you go even a minute over your due date because we are just so ready to begin this life with you.  but stay as long as you need, we will always be here waiting.

love, mommy

10 Gift Ideas for Photographers

10 Gift Ideas for Photographers | Bethadilly Photography

1.  a photography t-shirt

clickin moms sent me this amazing “it’s golden hour somewhere” t-shirt in heather gray to photograph for their store and…it’s one of my favorite t-shirts!  not only is it the softest shirt ever, but it’s such a fun shirt to wear to photo sessions or just because.  and because photographers are in love with the sweet tones of golden hour, this shirt is bound to make the photographer in your life super happy.

2.  lensbaby creative mobile kit

this is by far one of my favorite toys and such a quick and easy way to make a cell phone photo much more fantastic.  by attaching this lensbaby lens to your cell phone, you can achieve fun focal points surrounded by blurs that you will swoon over.  even better, this little lens attachment can fit right in your pocket, making it something that you can keep with you at all times!  if you are one that doesn’t want to carry around your heavy DSLR all the time, this is a perfect little toy for you to keep taking fantastic and creative photos without the heavy camera bag.

3.  the journey shutterbag

i love everything about my photography bag and i love to brag about it!  not only does it hold just about everything, but it is trendy and fashionable too!  i have lost count at how many times i have been complemented on my bag, i am in love with it!  to read even more about what shutterbag’s i own and to take a peek inside, check out the posts about my journey shutterbag and my jetsetter shutterbag.

4.  the everyday photograph

this is the best book for photographers who simply want to document their everyday with their camera.  learn how to see the beauty in your everyday and how to take pictures that you are happier with, by reading the everyday photograph.

5. a darling camera strap

you know that plain camera strap that comes in the box with the camera?  yeah, that is not cute!  camera straps are a fun and easy way to add a little personality to your camera, while making your photography wardrobe that much cuter.  and let me tell you, my camera strap is one of the first things i am always complimented on by clients when i pull my camera out of my bag.  to read more about what i recommend, click on over to read more about my favorite camera straps.

6.  adobe photoshop lightroom 5: classroom in a book

after going a little cross eyed trying to learn how to navigate lightroom, i purchased this book and it was a game changer!  not only is this book informative, but it is interactive and encourages you to be hands on and use the software as you are learning!  very quickly after reading this book, i found that i used the buttons in lightroom much more effectively and was editing photos confidently in the software.  to read a little more about this book and a similar one for photoshop, be sure to check out how i learned lightroom and photoshop.

7.  nikon D610

this camera has photographed countless family and newborn sessions with me and i absolutely adore it.  not only does it do all the functions i need it to do for both my personal and professional photography, but it has also held up perfectly for how much i use it.

camera purchase tip:  instead of buying a camera in a kit with an included lens, purchase the body only and then purchase the lens of your choice.  being able to choose the lens for you will ensure that you get a lens that you are actually going to use, instead of spending money on a lens that isn’t the best fit for you.

8.  sigma 50mm f/1.4 lens

and now you are wondering what the perfect lens is?  it is hands down the sigma 50mm f/1.4.  i honestly never take this lens off of my camera and use it to photograph my clients during my professional photography sessions as well as use it to personally photograph my everyday.  i love the low aperture of this lens, allowing me to create beautiful blur in my photos around my focal points.  if i could only keep one lens forever and had to throw the rest away, i would choose my sigma 50mm f/1.4 any day of the week.

9.  a photography book

now, i know i am making this really easy for you…but asking me to choose just one photography book that i love is like asking me to choose my favorite ice cream.  there are just too many great ones!  to take a peek at all of the lovely photography books that have inspired me along my journey with photography, click on over to read about what is on my photography bookshelf.  i love each and every one of them.

 10.  lensbaby composer pro sweet 35 lens

this lens is perfect for any photographer that needs a little boost of inspiration with their photography.  by attaching this lens to your camera, you will instantly see through your camera in a new way.  by being able to tilt the lens in any direction, you are given the freedom to create images that no other lens can help you achieve and the creativity is endless.

and these are just a few of my favorite things that make for great gift ideas for photographers!  it’s okay, you can print this list out about take it to the store with you.  or if you are a photographer, it’s okay to leave this list laying around for your loved ones to find.  😉  you’re welcome.

5 Reasons Why Every Photographers Needs A Shutterbag

if there is one thing that i love, it is a good camera bag.  well, and a cup of starbucks.  my camera is one of those things that i take everywhere i go, whether it is to a photo session, the grocery store, or on vacation.  because i am constantly on the go, it is really important that my photography gear is on the go with me, and protected!  and since i photograph my photo sessions with two camera bodies, it is also really important to me that i can carry a variety of lenses and cameras, all at the same time, without feeling like i am jamming them into my bag.  well, i finally found my dream bag.  i am in love.  i am in love with my journey shutterbag.

to inspire your everyday photography, be sure to read the everyday photograph to get started.

5 Reasons Why Every Photographer Needs A Journey Shutterbag

5 Reasons Why Every Photographer Needs A Shutterbag | bethadilly photography

kim, of shutterbag, gave me this gorgeous yellow journey shutterbag last week…and i am still speechless.  first of all, i ran out to meet the delivery guy when i heard the delivery truck arrive.  i was more than a little eager to have this bag in my life.  even the dog was eager to see it on delivery day!  everyone was smiling at my house.  and yes, i totally resisted the urge to rip open this box until after i snapped this photo of him by the box.  talk about self restraint!

5 Reasons Why Every Photographer Needs A Shutterbag | bethadilly photography

in the past week, this bag hasn’t moved out of my sight.  we have been on four photo sessions together and, more than ever, i am convinced that every photographer needs to have a journey shutterbag.  here are five reasons why i simply adore my new yellow journey shutterbag

5 Reasons Why Every Photographer Needs A Shutterbag | bethadilly photography

before i list all the things i love, it has to be said that kim, of shutterbag, is so sweet and kind.  she takes so much pride in these bags and personally writes thank you notes to each new bag owner and includes them in the boxes!  it is the little things like handwritten thank you notes that really mean something to me and it’s just one more reason why i love shutterbag.  and here are some more reasons why everyone photographer needs one…5 Reasons Why Every Photographer Needs A Shutterbag | bethadilly photography

1.  this bag is perfectly organized.

if there is one thing to know about me, it’s that i am fiercely organized.  and the journey shutterbag is the perfect example of organization.  there is a place for everything, including a padded area for my cameras and lenses, my macbook pro and ipad, and separate pockets for all the other things!  and i have a lot of other things i like to carry, including: extra camera batteries, my wallet, my daybook, car keys, client contracts + pens, and lots of memory cards.  it’s truly my everyday bag and i love that everything has a spot…and that everything is in it’s spot!

2.   it can carry a lot of gear, comfortably.

as i mentioned earlier, i photograph my sessions with two cameras, my nikon d600 and my nikon d610.  i photograph with two cameras because i like to use two lenses, my sigma 50mm f/1.4 lens and my nikon 24-85mm f3.5-4.5 lens, and it is easier for me to have each lens on each body so i don’t have to fuss with changing out lenses throughout my sessions.  i love that, not only does the journey shutterbag hold a lot of gear, but it also can hold both of my dslr’s with the lenses attached to them, plus an additional lens.  and it is such a time saver!  i love that i can keep my lenses on my cameras and i don’t have to waste time assembling and disassembling them as i am on the go.  and the inside of this bag is just as beautiful as the outside.  we all know that i have an obsession with stripes, so the inside of this bag absolutely thrills me!5 Reasons Why Every Photographer Needs A Shutterbag | bethadilly photography

3.  i love the deep front pockets.

there are two large pockets on the front of the journey shutterbag that make for perfect storage.  i love that they can hold the things that i want to store away from my camera gear, like makeup and car keys, yet they are deep enough to store these items without the fear of them slipping out of the bag.  they are also a great place to store lens pens and extra batteries and, because they are in the outside pockets, they are available for quick access.  this is just another example of how practical and well thought out this bag design is, and i love that!

4.  quality, quality, quality!

i love that this bag is real leather and it shows!  when clients see my bag, the quality impresses them.  i was even stopped at the grocery store this past week and complimented on my bag.  and i love surprising people when i tell them that it is not just a purse, but a camera bag!  i love it when people say, “what!?  you can fit all of that in there!?  i thought it was a purse!”  i love that!  i love that this bag is still fashionable, yet practical and protective of my gear.  i love that even when i am not heading to a photo session, i can still carry this bag wherever i go.

5.  beautiful, unique colors.

i love having a yellow camera bag for a lot of reasons.  first, it goes with every outfit and with every season.  second, this beautiful color stands out enough that it is really easy for clients to find me on location.  i always tell clients, “i have short blonde hair and a yellow camera bag,” and it’s always the camera bag that points me out when meeting new clients!  i love that shutterbag has a variety of beautiful bags in beautiful colors that really stand out and shine!

can you tell i am in love with my journey bag?  this bag is truly a game changer when it comes to carrying my photography gear and i didn’t realize how much time it saved me by being able to have everything perfectly organized, in easily accessible places, and also by being able to hold so much gear.  with a few dozen clients on the calendar so far for fall season, i am so happy that i will have my journey shutterbag by my side.

now go click on over to shutterbag’s beautiful website and fall in love with your new bag!  it will be your best purchase!

10 Tips For Photographing A Lifestyle Newborn Session

when i first started taking on newborn clients, i knew that i wanted to take the lifestyle approach.  i love the way that lifestyle newborn sessions are honest, natural, and incorporate the brand new parents into the photographs.  while i feel like posed newborn photography is beautiful, it is simply not for me and my style.  when i am talking with a soon to be daddy and expecting mommy, i explain to them that their newborn session will be very natural, organic, and candid.  i explain that i will be simply capturing them being…them!  on the day of the session, i show up to the client’s home with me and my camera gear, and only that.  no baskets nor themed outfits to put the babies in…just me and my camera.  having offered these sessions for awhile now, many photographers ask me for tips for photographing a lifestyle newborn session and i am more than happy to take you behind the scenes.

having a baby is a really huge milestone in client’s lives and they are trusting you, as their photographer, to document their sweetest moments as a growing family.  it’s important that you have a plan going into the session and create a stress free session for the new, and tired, mommy and daddy.  i can’t even count how many newborn families i’ve photographed and, throughout my experience, i’ve found 10 tips that really help me have a successful session each and every time.  take a peek at these 10 tips that will help you feel confident and organized during your next lifestyle newborn session!

to learn a little more about what posing guides have really helped to inspire my newborn photography and family sessions, be sure to check out my post about how i learned to pose my clients.  and to see what other photography books i love, check out what is on my bookshelf!

10 Tips For Photographing A Lifestyle Newborn Session

10 Tips For Photographing A Lifestyle Newborn Session | bethadilly photography

1. give the parents a little natural light homework

after my clients officially book a newborn session with me, i give them a little homework.  it’s really easy homework.  i have my clients watch the natural light in their home so we can determine what time of day it is best to photograph their newborn session.  because i am a natural light photographer, i use natural light only and do not use any artificial light like overhead lights nor a flash of any kind.  since i use natural light only, it is really important that we schedule the client’s newborn session at a time when it is the brightest in their home.  to prepare, i instruct clients to shut off all of the lights in their home for a day or two and watch the natural light for me.  i photograph mostly in the master bedroom and in the nursery, so i have clients watch those particular rooms for lighting.  when they note a time of day that it is the brightest, we schedule them for that time!  having great natural light is one of the most important parts of a successful in home newborn session.

sometimes client homes are still rather dark, even during the brightest time of the day.  and sometimes it is just a darker day in general, and the natural light decreases indoors.  because i would rather be safe than sorry, i always bring my tripod with me, just in case i need to use it to help steady my shot in low light situations.  i rarely have to use my tripod, but in the couple times that i have, i’ve been really thankful to have it!

10 Tips For Photographing A Lifestyle Newborn Session | bethadilly photography

2. get a tour.

the first thing i do when i arrive at the client’s home, after i gush over their newborn, is get a house tour.  having the client show me the master bedroom and nursery area upon arrival really helps me plan out the session right at the beginning.  during the tour, i can check out the natural light and quickly determine what photographs i want to photograph in what areas.  i also keep my eye out for other areas in their home that have great light, such as on the staircase or in their living room, and am mindful of other photography opportunities that the uniqueness of the client’s home allows.10 Tips For Photographing A Lifestyle Newborn Session | bethadilly photography

3. allow yourself enough time

allowing yourself enough time will keep the session running calm and smoothly, while maintaining that relaxing atmosphere for the new parents.  i tell my clients that my newborn sessions will be around 2 hours, allowing enough time for feedings and changings throughout the session.  one of the things i have found most helpful is that it is easier to allow time for the baby to be fed and changed throughout the session than to try and photograph a fussy baby.  by allowing time for parents to stop and feed or change their child ensures that everyone will stay happy and comfortable.  taking 5 minutes for a little break every once in a while will save you lots of time in the long run!

10 Tips For Photographing A Lifestyle Newborn Session | bethadilly photography

4. photograph the newborn with mom

she waited an entire nine months to meet her baby, so make sure you photograph the mom with her new little one.  have her cuddle her baby really close, with her face right next to theirs and simply have her gaze lovingly at her little one.  keeping mama and baby posed close creates a very maternal photo.  it is important to keep the new mother’s comfort in mind throughout the session.  before i start the session, i tell my new parents that if i should put them into a pose that is not comfortable for them, they are welcome to move into a position that feels better to them and we will pose them accordingly.  keeping clients comfortable and relaxed will show in their photos and help create natural images.

10 Tips For Photographing A Lifestyle Newborn Session | bethadilly photography

5. photograph the newborn with dad

while the mother gets to carry and bond with their baby for nine months, it’s after the birth that the new daddy really gets to have his own special moments.  so photograph it!  i love having daddies hold their new baby in their hands, as it creates a special photo that both shows a brand new bond and also shows just how little the newborn is in their father’s hands.  it’s a great way to show perspective!

10 Tips For Photographing A Lifestyle Newborn Session | bethadilly photography

6. capture the details of the nursery

parents put a lot of care and planning into their baby’s nursery, so make sure you take photos of their newborn amongst those precious four walls.  whether it is on a changing table or in their crib, be sure to capture them in their new room.  i love to get a pullback in the nursery, as a way of capturing all of the nursery details that surround the newborn.  i make sure to have my nikon 24-85mm f3.5-4.5 lens in my camera bag, so i can capture really spacious pullbacks that show the new family in their home.  when parents look back on their collection of newborn photos in the years ahead, they will be happy you took the time to photograph that room that they spent months perfectly planning.10 Tips For Photographing A Lifestyle Newborn Session | bethadilly photography

7. it’s okay to tell clients what to do!

to be honest, most clients really want you to simply tell them what to do.  put them into flattering positions and don’t be afraid to take control of the session and direct them.  they will thank you for it.  plus, you are the one behind the camera so be sure to take note of whether certain poses are working or if they need to be adjusted.  take the time to make those subtle tweaks, like placing the dad’s hand on her waist or arm and having him hug her close.  i love to get my parents really close throughout the session, with their newborn cuddled between them.  having them touch foreheads and gaze at one another, and then down at their newborn, creates a really intimate photo that shows the closeness of a brand new family.  if your clients are comfortable, have them steal a kiss or two throughout the session, too!  it makes for the sweetest photo.  10 Tips For Photographing A Lifestyle Newborn Session | bethadilly photography

8. capture all the baby details

after you take some pictures of their sweet face, take the time to capture all of the tiny details that newborns have.  while i have photographed newborns from 9 hours to 5 weeks old, i recommend that my clients book me for when their newborn is around 2 weeks old, as i feel they photograph the best then.  it gives the new parents long enough to get home from the hospital and settled, but still is soon enough to capture the newness of their baby.  after that two week window, it is also common and normal for some newborns to develop baby acne, so it is best to get their photographs scheduled before that could potentially show up.  but if it does, no worries!  edit, edit, edit!

and speaking of editing, brit chandler gave me some of her wonderful Lightroom tools from her “fresh pack” that are very helpful when editing newborn sessions.  i particularly love the macro enhancer and the skin smoother tools that she created, as they really help to create a very complete image that pay special attention to the detail!  go check out her presets for newborns and more, they are beyond amazing!

when photographing the details, be sure to get photos of their tiny fingers and toes, their ears, and even the top of their head.  newborns grow so fast so it is really important to photograph all of the tiny details so you can capture their newness.  i love to lay newborns on the master bedroom bed for this part of the session and i love to put my sigma 50mm f/1.4 lens on my nikon d610 when photographing details, as the low aperture helps me maintain a focus on the toes and hands, while creating a lovely blur around the focal point.  10 Tips For Photographing A Lifestyle Newborn Session | bethadilly photography

9. be sure to take a family photo

one of the main reasons why i love to photograph lifestyle newborn sessions is that they capture those moments of the parents interacting with their newborn.  parents and even their children can one day look back and see just how little their baby was in their arms, or what they looked like at the time.  i know it sounds obvious, but be sure to get a great family photograph.  i like to capture some candid, natural moments of the parents looking at their baby and then have them look at me for a more traditional first family portrait.

10 Tips For Photographing A Lifestyle Newborn Session | bethadilly photography

10. keep clicking, even during the breaks!

don’t set your camera down for even a second!  part of being a lifestyle photographer is capturing those candid moments of the family doing what they do.  and newborn families do a lot of feeding, changing, and cuddling.  what they don’t do a lot of is sleep!  make sure you take every opportunity to capture moments between parents and their new baby.  it is during these moments that honestly is captured and your clients will thank you for it.  10 Tips For Photographing A Lifestyle Newborn Session | bethadilly photography

11. bring a stool

okay, i know i was only going to give you 10 tips, but i just have one more!  along with your camera gear, bringing a step stool can be very helpful during sessions.  a step stool helps to give you a little more height when you want to photograph the newborn from above, such as when they are laying in their crib.  even getting one foot higher off the ground can make a world of difference in your photo!

what lenses i bring to my lifestyle newborn sessions

for my newborn sessions, i put my sigma 50mm f/1.4 lens on my nikon d610 and my nikon 24-85mm f3.5-4.5 lens on my nikon d600.  i love the low aperture of my sigma 50mm f/1.4 lens that allows me to get a sharp focus paired with a smooth surrounding, while my nikon 24-85mm f3.5-4.5 lens allows me to achieve those wide angles that i love for a great pullback photo.  and again, i always carry my tripod with me too, just in case i need a steady backup!  to read more about what gear i pack for my photography sessions, be sure to check out my post below about what gear is in my photography bag!

  • Mary - Take your macro lens too. You can really fill the frame with tiny fingers and toes. Go back further to fill the frame with a beautiful portrait of the baby, and it makes it really easy to leave anything distracting out of the frame. • Claudia - So over the in studio posed newborn sessions and looking for something different.  Your blog is a breath of fresh air.  I noticed that your clients all have beautiful homes. Have you come across clients homes that you want to run out of? If so, what do you do (other than make the best of it)?ReplyCancel

    • {beth} a-dilly - Ha ha, to be honest I have been pretty lucky and haven’t had a situation that I couldn’t make the best of. In some homes, I definitely focus more around windows for better light or have to get creative with compositions in order to remove distractions from the frame, but never felt like I wanted to run out of the house. ha ha.ReplyCancel

  • Meg B. - The tip on bringing a stool is golden. I should make a stool a standard part of my equipment. Just getting a few extra inches above the client, creates so many new angles. Thanks for the tip.ReplyCancel

How I Learned How To Pose Photography Clients

even though i am a lifestyle photographer, i definitely pose my clients into flattering and balanced positions that i know will photograph well.  once i have them into position, i then stand back and let them do their thing!  for me and my photography style, i find that this is the perfect balance between creating a photograph that will be balanced and pleasing to the eye, while still capturing those authentic and natural moments in photographs.  plus, clients honestly are more comfortable when you simply tell them what to do.  i have had so many clients tell me, “thank you for telling us what to do, you made it so easy!”  and that is what every photographer loves to hear!  we love to hear that the client had a great time and that they were comfortable.  because when clients are comfortable, they photograph naturally and you can truly capture their most genuine moments and emotions.  knowing how to pose photography clients successfully will not only help you run your sessions more smoothly, but it will also enhance your images visually.

i am always asked by other photographers how i learned to pose my clients and, to be honest, just the simple act of practicing posing during sessions has taught me so much about how to position people.  there will be things that work great, and then there are the times when i upload a photo and know that my posing could have been better.  those moments are when i learn the most and i adjust my clients accordingly the next time.

i know, i know…me telling you to practice posing with clients is probably not the answer you wanted to hear.  but, practice really is one of the ways i really learned the most about posing and what things work well and what things simply don’t.  but besides practicing, i have a handful of posing guides that have really helped me along the way and that i love to recommend to other photographers who need a little inspiration with posing.  grab your notepad and pencil, i am going to tell you what posing guides i love!

How I Learned How To Pose Photography Clients

How I Learned How To Pose Photography Clients | bethadilly photography

i recently got some downloadable posing guides from Design Aglow and i am in love!  because i mostly photograph families, baby bumps and newborns, i decided to start with the family posing guide and the maternity posing guide.  and let me tell you, i was really impressed!  now i really want the newborn posing guide, too and it’s certainly on my wish list!  not only could i download them to my ipad for easy use when i am on the go, but i also found the tips and posing inspiration in the guides to be excellent!  i was instantly inspired and felt so excited during my following sessions because i was excited to try out some new things with my clients!

after being so impressed with the family posing guide and maternity posing guide, i was instantly found myself on Design Aglow’s website looking at all of their other posing guides!  and i definitely have even more on my wish list, like the posing guide for engagements and newborns!

there have also been some additional posing guides on my bookshelf that i have inspired me along the way in my professional photography journey that i love to recommend to others, including:

the design aglow posing guide for family portrait photography: 100 modern ideas for photographing newborns, babies, children, and families by lena hyde.  i simply could not put this book down!

the design aglow posing guide for wedding photography: 100 moderns ideas for photographing engagements, brides, wedding couples, and wedding parties by lena hyde  {even though i am not a wedding photographer, this book has inspiration for engagement sessions that really inspired me!}

photographing families: tips for capturing timeless images by michele celentano

and for those of you who love food and want to learn more about how to pose and photograph food to create amazing photographs, you simply have to get eat pretty things by trisha hughes.  it is the best ebook ever and i can’t even tell you how much i learned about food photography simply by reading her amazing book!  not to mention, trisha photographs food so perfectly and beautifully, and her images are so inspirational!  for more info about eat pretty things, check out a post i wrote about the only book you’ll ever need to learn about food photography.

learning to pose was one of those techniques that i simply learned over time and experience with my clients.  i feel like i get better and better with every session that i photograph because i am gaining experience and learning from those trail and error moments.

i love love love photography books and i would love to hear what books have inspired you, whether it is with posing, composition, or camera technique!  if you have a photography book that has particularly helped you along your journey with photography, be sure to tell me about it in the comment section below.  i love recommendations!

and because i just can’t resist recommending one more fabulous book that every photographer needs in their life, go buy the unexpected everyday by courtney slazinik.  after being so confused by manual mode, i bought this book and it changed the way i photograph.  this book taught me manual mode in minutes, yes minutes, and inspired me to learn more about composition and how to create stunning everyday photographs!
