8 Tips For Photographing Natural Family Photographs

my favorite emails come from the clients saying, “you did it!  you captured us perfectly!”  and that is my goal as a family photographer.  i like to capture my clients being them.  instead of putting my clients into position and having them stare towards my camera with forced smiles, i love creating images that capture them being naturally themselves.  when clients look back on their images, they want to look at themselves being authentic and real.  ask any parent and they will tell you that they love photos that capture their children’s personalities.  they don’t want to see fake smiles from their children, they want to see pictures of their children being themselves…silly, giggly and all.  they want to see that goofy grin with missing teeth and how they love to run around as they giggle.  photographing natural family photographs is all about capturing moments that really happen instead of moments that are forced.

to learn more about how i learned to place my clients within the frame, check out my post on how i learned to pose my clients.

8 Tips for Photographing Natural Family Photographs

1.  encourage interaction.

after i get my clients placed close together, i encourage them to cuddle and kiss their little ones.  i always tell my clients to pretend that i am not even there and to just be them.  to ease any confusion, i always say, “i am going to step back and just capture your sweet moments together.  don’t worry, i will tell you when to look at the camera.”  and then i simply do that.  i step back and just let them laugh, snuggle, and tell funny jokes…capturing every single smooch and genuine laugh.  every once in awhile i will tell them to look at me, and those are the smiles that are priceless!  by allowing them time to have fun with one another and loosen up, i am easing them into a photo that will capture them genuinely smiling and being who they truly are.

2.  incorporate favorite family activities.

a lot of my families love telling me about the fun things they like to do together.  whether it is throwing rocks in the pond or carrying their children on their shoulders, incorporating activities that families love to do is a great way to create a natural photograph.  allowing families, especially the children, to do the things that make them happy makes it even easier to create a beautiful family portrait because you can simply let them have fun, while you step back and document it.  plus, when families look back on their pictures they want to see themselves doing the things that made them happy!  it’s all about capturing their true memories and documenting that moment in their lives.

3.  have families bring some fun!

documenting family moments means capturing them at a certain moment in their lives.  those are the moments they are going to look back on with warm hearts and think, “oh, remember when we loved to do that!?”  whether it is taking picnics or pulling their little one around in a classic red wagon, encourage your clients to bring items that define their current family moments.  for the clients who want to bring items, i have them tell me what they are bringing before their session so i can be sure to have some ideas prepared to incorporate their activity.

8 Tips for Photographing Natural Family Photographs | bethadilly photography

4.  put someone on the spot.

this one is of my favorite tricks, as it creates the best portraits.  after positioning my clients close together and having them look at me, i will suddenly say, “everybody look at dad!”  or “everyone look at sister!”  oh, the reactions are priceless!  when clients look at one another, they giggle.  they forget that their picture is being taken and they get lost in the silly moment, which creates genuine emotion.

8 Tips for Photographing Natural Family Photographs | bethadilly photography

5.  take a little walk.

i do this during every single session.  having them hold hands, i have my clients walk down a road together, then turn around and walk back.  i tell them to look at their children or one another during this time and, from time to time, swing their little ones up in the air.  not only do the little ones just love this, but the parents always look at them in the most adoring way…a look that i love to capture.  if you have more than one child at your session, it’s always helpful to space parents between the children to help with behavior.  sometimes the last thing siblings want to do is hold hands with one another, but they always love holding mom or dad’s hand.  to make things even more fun, play red light, green light as they walk towards you!  it helps create some giggles.

8 Tips for Photographing Natural Family Photographs | bethadilly photography

6.  up, up, up and away!

this is a great one for the whole family and everyone loves it.  on the count of three, have mom or dad lift the littlest one up in the sky while everyone looks up at them.  then take a break (mom or dad’s arms will want a little break), count to three and have them do again a few times.  if you have another sibling at the session, encourage them to look up at their little sister or brother too.  everyone’s sweet reaction during this activity creates the sweetest photo.  even better, position your camera behind the parent’s shoulder and capture the little one’s reaction as they are lifted in the air.

8 Tips for Photographing Natural Family Photographs | bethadilly photography

7.  get witty.

don’t worry, i won’t make you tell jokes during your session.  but let siblings tell jokes to one another.  this allows them to have a silly moment, while forgetting their picture is being taken.  never will you hear parents at my sessions say, “stop being silly!” because i allow a little sillyness to take place.  it helps break up the session a little bit and creates some sweet smiles in the process.  what if the kids don’t know any jokes?  well, have them whisper a secret to one another and watch the reaction.  most of the time, just telling or hearing a secret that nobody else knows will encourage cute little smiles.

8 Tips for Photographing Natural Family Photographs | bethadilly photography

8.  just let them run!

you know they want to do it.  they know they want to do it.  so let them do it!  let those little ones run around and have some fun!  most little ones are happiest when they are on the move.  they are at that stage when they want to be independent, so let them be!  crank up that shutter speed to capture their fast movement and let them run it out!  again, playing red light, green light is a great game for incorporating movement into your session while also getting them to stop moving from time to time so you can get the photo!

there are so many fun things you can do with your clients to create natural looking family portraits, but the most important thing is to have fun.  don’t be afraid to have fun with your clients!  when they walk away from their session and look back on their photos, you want them to remember having a great time while getting their photographs taken instead of being stressed out and uncomfortable.  creating a fun and memorable experience for your clients will not only create beautiful and natural photos, but it will be why they email you again and again every time they need to update their photographs.  creating a fun experience will take you from being a family’s one time photographer to their one and only photographer.

  • Andrea - Hi Beth! Would you be willing to share which focus mode(s) you use? This is something I’ve been struggling with when it comes to shooting multiple people. I would love any advice you have on this topic! Thanks so much!ReplyCancel

    • {beth} a-dilly - Certainly! I toggle focus, so I am always changing up my focal point with each photo I take. When photographing multiple people, make sure your aperture is high enough. They usually say to accommodate a f/stop for every one person, so one person could be achieved at f/1.8, 2 at f/2.8, 3 at f/3.5, etc. However, most of my family photography is photographed at f/2.8, it’s my go to aperture. Let me know if that answer your question about focusing…I’ll also definitely write this on my list for blog posts to write about soon!ReplyCancel

5 Tips For Scouting Outdoor Photography Locations

one part of creating successful outdoor portraits is choosing the appropriate location.  not only do you want to choose a location that is going to provide great light, but you also want your location to fit the style of the people you are photographing.  when scouting outdoor photography locations, your location should give you a variety of options when it comes to photographing, allowing you to move throughout the space during the session and allow you to get the most out of your surroundings.  and most importantly, your location should showcase and allow your clients to shine instead of be distracting and drown your clients out.

so how do you find the perfect location for your clients with all of these amazing qualities?  it is easier than you think.  the next time you are scouting outdoor photography locations for your next session, be sure to keep these 5 tips in mind when you are narrowing down your perfect photography spots.

to read more about client posing, check out my post on how i learned to pose my photography clients.

5 Tips For Scouting Outdoor Photography Locations

5 Tips For Scouting Outdoor Photography Locations | bethadilly photography

1.  look for textures.

as you are walking around your potential location, note the textures that surround you.  textures like soft grass, wooden buildings, brick walls, leafy trees or cobblestone walkways can all add interesting elements to your photographs.  also be aware of the tones that surround the location.  is it a city street full of neon signage or is it a muted field full of calming tones?  either are fine, but you will want to be aware of the style of the setting so you can be sure your client will naturally fit within the scene instead of stick out like a sore thumb.  locations can be great, but they also need to be great for your clients!

5 Tips For Scouting Outdoor Photography Locations | bethadilly photography

2.  framing opportunities.

look for opportunities where you can frame your subject within the surroundings.  framing opportunities can be found in doorways, around trees or on stairwells.  framing your subject is a great way of both respecting the subject and their surroundings within the same photograph.

5 Tips For Scouting Outdoor Photography Locations | bethadilly photography

3.  open shade.

one of the most important things to do when location scouting is to check out your location during the time of day that your session is scheduled.  if you are searching for a location for a client who wants to meet at 9:00am, be sure you are looking at locations during that same time so you can check out the exact light you will be working with.  when looking at light, it is important that your location has a lot of open shade where you can place your subjects outside of the harsh sunlight to avoid glare.  if you are working with younger clients, be sure you have a lot of open shade so they have room to move and run within it.  if your clients are older, you can get away with a location that provides limited shade because older clients can take instruction better and will allow you to pose them exactly where the light is right.

5 Tips For Scouting Outdoor Photography Locations | bethadilly photography

4.  give your clients room to go!

my lifestyle portraiture style has my clients being candidly themselves, which often involves moving within the frame.  because movement is important, i like to make sure my locations have enough room for my clients to move about without feeling restricted.  good things to look for when you want to incorporate movement are walking roads and open fields with plenty of open shade or ideal light.

5 Tips For Scouting Outdoor Photography Locations | bethadilly photography

5.  provide a variety of styles.

because all clients are unique, it is important to have a variety of locations available for your clients to choose from.  i have two main locations that i provide to my clients, one being more rustic and full of nature and the other location has a more urban style with charming city streets.  the locations that you provide will depend on the area that you live and the clients that you attract, but it is always good to provide your clients with a small variety of choices of locations to use so you can ensure that they are comfortable within their surroundings.  and when your clients are comfortable and can feel like themselves, you will have a more successful session.

with the right lighting, the freedom to move within the space, and fun textures to make your photographs even more intriguing, having the perfect outdoor location can really make or break your session.  next time you are scouting outdoor photography locations to host your client session, be sure to keep these tips in mind and you are bound to find a location that is a gem!

8 Tips To Grow Your Instagram Following

>>this post contains affiliate links.  thank you in advance for supporting bethadilly photography.<<

whether you are a photographer or not, instagram is a wonderful place to share your little glimpse of the world through the use of your camera.  i adore instagram because, unlike facebook, it is primarily about sharing your life through photographs and that’s it!  and while many people debate whether instagram should be for cell phone photos only, i say…whatev.  my feed is primarily made up of photos taken with my nikon d61o and nikon d600.  if you are looking to improve your presence on instagram, keep these 8 tips to grow your instagram following in mind.

8 Tips To Grow Your Instagram Following

8 Tips To Grow Your Instagram Following | bethadilly photography

because i prefer the simplicity of instagram over chaos of facebook, i use instagram to share my personal photography with the world.  instagram has introduced me to some of my best photographer friends and helped me develop relationships with great people in the photography world.  last year alone, i more than doubled my instagram following from january 1st to december 31st, getting my name further and further out into the photography world and, in turn, opening doors that have led to great opportunities.

getting instagram to do work for you is simple and starts with building a following that supports you and your photography.  like everything, building your audience and growing your instagram following takes a little effort.  but that effort can be broken down by following these 8 simple tips:

1.  post often…but don’t overdo it!

people click that “follow” button for a reason…because they want to see more of your photography.  knowing this, don’t leave them hanging!  posting often shows others that your instagram is active and worthy of a follow.  but here’s the thing, posting too much can dwindle your following and hurt you more than help you.  to be honest, people overposting is the main reason why i choose to unfollow someone.  i personally like to post once a day, as it shows that i am actively photographing every day, but not so much that i am clogging someone’s feed with my images.  as a general rule of thumb, post at least once but not more than twice per day.

8 Tips To Grow Your Instagram Following | bethadilly photography

2.  tell people about you!

you know that little bio section by your profile picture on your instagram page?  take a second and write a little something about yourself there.  what you write should reflect what you share.  that little bio section should tell a potential follower a little bit about you and what images they should expect to see in your gallery.  for example, mine says:  “photographer.  mama to be.  red wine snob.  luckiest wife.  starbucks lover.  apple product addict.  creator of >>the bethadilly challenge<<.”  when someone sees my bio, they can expect to see a gallery full of professional photographer images, baby bump selfies, my choice of vino {well, before i was preggo}, mushy posts about my hubby, a plethora of starbucks cups and my obsession with apple technology.  should people be interested, they hit the “follow” button.  should those things not interest them, they don’t.

3.  be relatable.  but don’t whine.

people like to follow people who are real.  did your kid just throw a bowl of cherrios on the floor?  take a cute pic of it, add a funny “such is life” caption, and post it!  people love to see that others are just like them, during the messy times or not.  posting pictures of your everyday shows others that you are a true person who has to grocery shop just like everyone else.  and when people can relate to you, the are happy to follow you because they want to stick around and see more about your life.  but here’s the thing…while you are being relatable, but lighthearted about it.  nobody likes to follow someone who whines or complains a lot, so keep it fun and positive…even when it is about your kid crying in the middle of the target aisle.  take a positive and humorous spin on it.  skip the “oh my gosh, my kid is so embarrassing” rant and say, “looks like someone needed their coffee this morning!  :)”  when in doubt, keep it light.  people want to follow you to be inspired, not bummed out.

4.  be apart of something bigger.

a great way of getting to know other instagrammers, and therefore gain some followers, is by joining a community.  many communities connect through the use of hashtags, whether they are all sharing photos of their cats or participating in a 365 photography project.  joining communities connects you with people who have the same interests as you.  there are communities about coffee, crafting, nature…anything you could think of!  so when you stumble upon a community that fits you, be sure to use their hashtags when it fits your photo.  and if you want to join a really fun community full of photographers who are completing a photo a day challenge, join in on #thebethadillychallenge with me on instagram!

8 Tips To Grow Your Instagram Following | bethadilly photography

5.  give a little, to get a little.

remember when your momma told you, “treat people how you want to be treated.”  well, it applies on instagram!  if you want to get some followers, follow some peers who’s photograph you enjoy and actively “like” their photos.  if you relate to them and their photography, chances are they will relate to you too.  sometimes they will follow you back, and sometimes they won’t.  and that’s okay!  not everyone you follow is going to follow you back.  but by actively browsing through the hashtags that you use and liking other people’s photos, you may get some people clicking over to your profile to see what you are all about!

6.  be consistent.

people will start following you because they like your photography and can relate to your style.  knowing that, give them what they are there for.  be consistent about what you choose to post and be true to your audience.  if your bio and images say you love to photograph nature, maybe don’t go overboard on posting about interior design.  i mean, you can always do that if you want…but just know that some people will decide to unfollow you because they don’t relate to your interests.  so decide what you want your niche to be, and do it!  for me, my instagram is full of images of my everyday and my followers stick around because they want to see more of my day to day.  do i get unfollowed?  oh yeah, every day!  and that is okay!  with every person that unfollows, i gain someone who does follow.  don’t get bummed when people unfollow you.  it’s not personal, it’s just the way it is.

7.  be responsive.

if someone asks you a question, try to respond.  if someone gives you a compliment, try to say thank you.  now, can you do this every single day?  of course not.  but from time to time, try your best to respond to your followers who leave comments on your images.  it shows them that there is someone behind the photography you are posting and that you appreciate them.  even better, try and comment on other people’s photos from time to time and show your appreciation for their photography, too!

8.  track your stats!

at the beginning of every month, i write down how many followers i have, tracking my follower growth from month to month.  on the months where i have a big spike in followers, i reflect on what i did differently to be successful in followings.  what kinds of images was i posting that gained attention?  there are also going to be the months where your following just plateaus a bit and that’s okay!  but look back on that month and try and decipher why.  after two years of posting once a day to my instagram, last fall i barely posted once a week when i found out i was pregnant.  why?  well, i basically slept through my first trimester.  😉  when i look back on the stats for those months, i wasn’t losing followers, but i wasn’t gaining them at the same rate i normally do.  seeing that, i know that my followers like my daily posts and daily interaction with them.  it’s all a learning process, and your stats say it all!

and there you go!  easy peasy, right?  by consistently posting, being aware of your audience, engaging in communities and watching how you present yourself on social media, you can start building your instagram following!

Letters To My Little One | 24 Weeks In My Belly

Letters To My Little One | 24 Weeks In My Belly | bethadilly photography

friday, january 1st, 2016

hello my love!

happy new year, teeny tiny!  this is your year.  last night i told your daddy how happy 2015 was for us and he said, “2016 will be even happier.”  we cannot even wait to meet you in 16 more fridays and i know it will be here before we know it.  i can’t even believe how fast time has flown by from that moment when we first found out we were having you.  just promise me one thing…that you won’t grow up too fast.  that we will take every moment for the blessing that it is and we won’t let time pass so quickly.  just stay little and be ours forever.

i know you just adored our babymoon to new york city just as much as your daddy and i did.  and we sure enjoyed every second we were there, celebrating you!  we spoiled you a bit as we dined at celebrity chef restaurants each night and enjoyed that perfect slice of carrot cake at carlo’s bake shop.  don’t worry, mommy is looking into having more of that carrot cake delivered from new jersey…those little bites were heaven, weren’t they?  and when we weren’t enjoying everything scrumptious about new york, you enjoyed broadway just as much as we did as you kicked and hiccuped throughout Wicked.  oh, the music was everything we hoped it would be and as you danced in my belly, i knew you loved it too.  if that wasn’t enough, you were such a trooper as i stubbornly climbed the stairs in the statue of liberty.  even carrying you with me, we made it while others were giving up.  i guess that is something you should know about your daddy and me, we like to do it all and live with no regrets.

during our trip, your daddy just made my heart pitter patter as he talked about wanting to bring you back to new york.  to see a play on broadway, to take in the beautiful sights, visit the museums and let you pick out little souvenirs to remind you of your travels.  we talk a lot about how we want to live our life with you and, most of all, we want to give you memorable experiences.  we want to take you places and show you so many things about life, instead of tell you about them.  we want you to try new things and not be afraid to fail, but never give up if you do.  and while you are living life with no regrets, please always be kind.  show kindness in everything you do.  be a good person and always help others.  always be yourself and be yourself unapologetically.

this year is your year!  everything that we do from this moment on, we do for you.  you are our everything.

love, mommy

Letters To My Little One | 22 Weeks In My Belly

Letters To My Little One | 22 Weeks In My Belly | bethadilly photography

thursday, december 17th, 2015

hey there, teeny tiny!

it was only ten days ago that i wrote the first letter to you, but there is so always so much to say that i find myself sitting down again with a million words in my head that i need to write down.  i just don’t want to forget even one moment of our pregnancy because it has been the best experience of our life.  we had your 20 week appointment and you are just as perfect as we knew you would be.  the doctor said you are doing fantastic, and mommy got an A+ in being pregnant.

i continue to brag, “it’s so easy!” when others ask me how i am feeling.  not a touch of morning sickness, except for a couples moments of, “well, maybe i feel nauseaus.”  and that only happened about 5 times and for 5 minutes.  we’ve got this, little one.  we are just having the best time and you are making it so easy to have such a blissful experience!  and they always say that easy pregnancies make easy babies, so maybe that will be true too!

by now you can taste food, and as you very well know, my only noticeable craving is spaghetti.  poor daddy has been such a champ and whenever he comes through the door to see spaghetti on the table he says, “no worries, mama bear!  i love spaghetti!”  we now even know the secret ingredients to your great grandma’s spaghetti sauce and can make it all by ourselves, it’s oh so delicious and makes the house smell heavenly!  sometimes daddy and i wonder if you will be born with a spaghetti noodle on your cute little forehead. but at least we are eating healthy!  no junk for you and your cute little belly.  only the best for us.

the doctor also gave us a picture of your cute little feet, which they were barely able to get a photo of because you are kicking like crazy!  we felt your first kick at 17 weeks 6 days and you have been kicking ever since.  especially after daddy’s homemade chicken enchiladas…you definitely did a happy dance after i shared those with you!  and when i say share, it’s not really true.  you don’t really share food, darling one.  you take it!  i haven’t felt full since being pregnant, but i don’t mind you taking my food.  you just keep growing and growing so we can meet you soon!

and with how quickly you grow, i am a little nervous at all the beautiful clothes that are hanging in your closet.  your wardrobe is so darling, your daddy thinks you will be the best dressed baby there ever was.  which is totally going to be true because mommy thoughtfully styled your wardrobe.  we wonder if we might need to change your outfit a couple times a day to get through all those clothes before you grow out of them.  but that’s okay, you will just have a morning, afternoon, and evening look!  there’s nothing wrong with that.

we have our christmas tree up and you have more presents under the tree that i do!  and that’s the way we like it.  you are our everything and love that everyone simply wants to spoil you, we are just starting the spoiling early.  daddy said that i could open your presents for you, he is just sweet like that.  he is also going to make us a very yummy homemade spaghetti and meatball dinner on christmas day.  it’s our tradition.  we eat his scrumptious spaghetti and watch “a christmas story” every year.  and next year you will be with us and we will start all of our new traditions as a family of three!  i already have your little organic cotton christmas jammies all picked out and we are dreaming about all the fun things we will do next christmas with you.

once again, you are ready for lunch and it’s time to feed you a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and some fresh grapes on the side!  even though you twist and turn all day long, your biggest kicks come after we eat so i always get excited to have a snack so i can feel you.  although when i get nervous that you are still, your daddy does have to remind me that you need your sleep so you can grow nice and strong!

18 more weeks, little one!  our greatest adventure begins in just 18 weeks!  it’ll be here in a blink of an eye.

love, mommy
