i love to blog. it is my little piece of the world where i can talk about…what i want to talk about. whether it be photography, my life, or what i did over the weekend, my blog is just a little piece of me. having been a blogger for a couple of years, i have learned so much about the blogging life. the ups and the downs of having a blog, meeting new friends through blogging, and then there are those days that i have woken up and thought, “yikes! i haven’t blogged in about a month!” trust me, it happens. but through it all, i have learned a few main things that are important about blogging that will help to both keep you motivated to write and keep your readers interested. here are some things for you to try before hitting that publish button the next time you blog. and if you are new to blogging, try to make some of these tips a habit as you start your journey with blogging by referring to these 6 things to remember when blogging.

6 Things To Remember When Blogging
.jpg)
1. Use Photos
of the things to remember when blogging, adding photos to your blog posts is a must. not only does is satisfy your visual readers, but it also grabs the attention of your audience. people love looking at photos and having a visual can really help you tell your story. next time you sit down to write a blog post, be sure to add a photo or two throughout your post. your readers will love it! photos also help to catch the eye of a reader who is just stopping by your blog for the first time and may encourage them to browse your site!
2. Have A Purpose
as you sit down to write a post, think about what the purpose of the post is. is it to tell a funny story? is it is inspire someone? it is to teach someone something new? is it to simply tell your reader about your day? whatever your purpose may be, pinpoint it and stick to it! it is okay to have more than one purpose, but sometimes two separate ideas deserve their own blog post. try not to navigate too far away from your original topic/purpose because the reader may become uninterested. keeping your reader on your blog is one of the most important things to remember when blogging.
3. Write Naturally By Using Your Voice
the one thing i love about my blog is that is it mine. it is all mine and it sounds like me. i write like i speak. my blog is just one long natural conversation, with pictures. for example, i love using punctuation to emulate voice. like this sentence, “i could drink starbucks all. day. long.” i love the use of periods to add drama to a sentence. when writing your blog posts, be sure that they are you! of course, you want to make sure your spelling and grammar are both correct, but remember to use your voice. there are a lot of blogs that i love to read because i love the writer’s voice…it feels like we are chatting when i read their posts. i am drawn to reading things that are written smoothly, concisely and with a little dash of humor mixed in. i should also mention that it is okay if you don’t know what your writing style is right away. sometimes it takes awhile to develop your voice so keep on writing and you will get there. writing styles are very personal and everyone perfects their style in a different way and at a different time.
need some ideas for what to write about? i’ve got 100 ideas for you in my post 100 photography blog post ideas.
4. Keep A List Of Blog Topic Ideas
whether it is on your phone or written on a list by your computer, keep a list of potential blog topic ideas. i love making lists of blog ideas and keep it in my daily planner. i am always thinking of blog ideas and running to my planner to write them down. trust me, if i don’t write them down immediately…they completely disappear! i have been known to completely stop my cart in the middle of a target aisle to write down a blog idea. i am serious. keeping a list of blog post ideas will come in handy on those days when you feel uninspired to write. sometimes you just need an idea to start! my favorite planner to keep me organized is the simplified planner by emily ley. it is a must for organization and is the perfect way for me to organize what blog posts i need to write, publish, and promote on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis!
5. Dedicate A Day + Time To Blog
whether it is once a week or every single day, dedicate a specific time to sit down and write your blog post without distractions. having consistent posts is one of the most important things to remember when blogging. some people write better first thing in the morning and some people love to blog during lunch. whatever time works for you, schedule it! it is important that you make time for your blog, and make a habit out of sitting down at a time that is best for you. so write it in your planner and stick to it! it will help you develop a routine for writing.
6. Announce Your Posts On Social Media
once that beautiful post is written and the publish button is clicked, announce your post! whether it is on instagram or facebook, let others know that you have a new post written and it’s up. most people don’t check blogs every single day, so notifying them that a new post is up is very helpful to them and to your blog. i also suggest watching the traffic flow on your blog. it can be really interesting to see how many people stop by to read your posts, what time of day is popular for your readers to stop by, and what social media platforms are navigating people to your site. i know this may sound funny, but site stats are really interesting to read, can tell you a lot about your audience, and reading them is pivotal to your blog’s success.
there are many things to remember when blogging, but by keeping them in mind and doing them every time you will begin blogging successfully in no time. if i could give you one more little tip, just have fun! blogging is a lot of fun and your blog should be just that. have some other great ideas that will encourage bloggers? be sure to share them in the comments section! i love learning about blog tips and love learning new things even more.

Bethadilly’s Bookshelf
.jpg)
please note, the books below list the exact editions that are on my shelf. however, be aware that there may be new editions out so please be sure that you are purchasing the latest release for each title. happy reading!
the design aglow posing guide for family portrait photography | lena hyde i read this book from cover to cover and loved every single page. this book gives tips for achieving certain poses and interacting with clients. plus, the photography inspiration among these pages is well worth the purchase. halfway through this book, i went online to purchase any and all books written by this author. i would definitely recommend that you purchase this title. it is one of the best books on my bookshelf.
the design aglow posing guide for wedding photography | lena hyde this book is actually on the mail truck, on it’s way to my house. i wanted to include it though because this author is really good! it is just like the previous book, but covers different types of photography. and, like i said, i was so impressed with the first book that i bought this one immediately! while i do not do wedding photography, this book also covers engagement photography so i am excited to get some tips and tricks for my couples!
your family in pictures | me ra koh so far, i have only read the introduction but i am already in love with this book. this book is going to tell you how to capture the everyday moments with your children whether it is during breakfast or during a sporting event. even though i have briefly browsed this book so far, i am already certain that i will purchase the rest of me ra koh’s books. because this covers more personal and everyday photography, i am setting it aside until after my busy fall season is over since right now i am focused mainly on client interaction and inspiration. however, i am so excited to get the chance to sit down with this book and a glass of wine after the busy fall season is over.
a beautiful mess photo book idea | elsie larson + emma chapman this book just arrived last week and i am already in love. while i haven’t read it yet, i have definitely browsed through the pages and i am swooning over the inspiration. it seems as though this book covers all types of photography and has a great variety of tips.
photographing families: tips for capturing timeless images | michele celentano this book contains inspiration for how to pose families of any ages. when i opened this book and browsed the pages, i was instantly inspired by the photographs and the posing. i have only browsed this book so far, but intend to read it from cover to cover since it also includes tips for client interaction during family sessions. there is also some tips about composition and creative cropping that i am anxious to read!
adobe photoshop cs6 classroom in a book i read this book from cover to cover and did all of the exercises. this book really helped me to learn the software and all of its features. i would recommend this book to anyone who needs help learning photoshop. the lessons in this book really help you to learn the features because you are actually practicing in the software.
adobe photoshop lightroom 5 classroom in a book i read this book from cover to cover and did all of the lessons. i can honestly say that i understand lightroom so much better because of this book and the exercises inside. i bought this book right after i purchased lightroom and after i was done reading it, i immediately started editing all of my sessions in lightroom and i feel very comfortable navigating the software. if you need help learning lightroom, i would recommend giving this book a try!
adobe photoshop cc classroom in a book i also read this book from cover to cover and completed all of the exercises. while i only use photoshop for certain editing tasks, i learned so much about the features of the software because of this book. i also do reference this book if there is something that i want to do in the software that i am not sure how to do. it is really nice to keep on hand for reference on some of the basic tools.
david busch’s nikon d600 guide to digital slr photography | david d. busch if you need help learning all of the functions about your camera and you don’t want to go cross-eyed reading your manual, see if david busch has a book on your camera model. i have read about half of this book and i have tabs all over! i reference this book all the time if i have a question about a button or if i want my camera to do something specific. this book is a great guide for my camera and is written really well.
aperture 3 | dion scoppettuolo while i don’t use aperture to edit my photos anymore, i want to add it to this post because this book was really helpful when learning the software. when i first started with photography, i used aperture to edit my photos and reading this book from cover to cover really helped me to learn the software. so, if you use aperture and want to learn more about the software, i would recommend giving this book a try.

[…] what do you do to build your business during the off season? i’m on long island and with the cold temps no one is thinking photo sessions. like you, we have really cold winters so the inquiries are a little less than during the rest of the year. i usually get less family inquiries during the winter after the holidays, but do get more newborn and engagement inquires during the off season. i always tell photographers to work even harder during the off season. during the slower season, i do a lot of behind the scene maintenance, such as perfect my website, update contracts, training/research, etc. by training, i mean that i take the time to read through all my photography books and read photography tips on blogs. i take advantage of the slower season to improve my skills and become a better photographer for my clients, whether i am improving my camera skills or taking the time to learn more about my editing software. all of these little things, in the end, really do grow my business because i am eventually offering more. to read more about what photography books i am reading, be sure to check out what books are on my bookshelf. I just completed Lightroom Classroom in a Book and am about to move on to Photoshop. I noticed that some of the Photoshop book uses Adobe Bridge. Is this a must, especially if I’m using Lightroom for organization? I was just excited to get started on Photoshop and don’t know if I need to get a different book!
-
hello kaitlin! yes, they talk about the bridge, but i have never used it because it doesn’t work for me and my workflow, so i don’t think it is a must! there is also another book for photoshop that i bought, and here is a link to the post i wrote about it so you can check it out! http://bethadilly.com/how-to-learn-lightroom-photoshop/

[…] a photography book now, i know i am making this really easy for you…but asking me to choose just one […]
last friday felt like christmas morning. a beautiful white box arrived at my home with that beautiful name written on it. i may or may not have alternatively jumped up and down and squealed when i saw it. inside of the box was a beautiful new camera bag for fall and it arrived just in time. to be honest, i didn’t open it right away. knowing myself, i knew that i would spend the rest of my day drooling over my new kelly moore bag and moving my gear into it. so i told myself i had to catch up on all my client emails, finish the laundry, and start dinner before i could open that pretty white box. as you can imagine, i did all of those things at record speed and before i knew it, i was sitting cross legged on the floor, with a glass of white, ripping the tape off of the box. the kelly moore kate bag was sitting perfectly inside.

The Kelly Moore Kate Bag
.jpg)
i was so excited that kelly moore sent me this beautiful new camera bag for me to use and write a review for! everyone, meet the kelly moore kate bag. kate, meet everyone. and let me tell you, she is just as gorgeous as i thought she would be. the beautiful natural tones and the classic buckles keep this bag looking simple, yet fashionable. the kate bag has a very urban style that i just love! and my hubby loves it too! i am the type of wife that always asks her hubby if he would hold her bag. and because the kelly moore kate bag is styled for guys and girls, he doesn’t mind being seen with it. he didn’t hesitate to toss this bag over his shoulder and he rocked it! the little details of this bag are my favorite part. i love a messenger strap. when shopping for a camera bag, the messenger strap is a deal breaker for me. when at photo sessions, i love that i can toss my bag across my body, leaving my hands free to simply focus on my camera. and the strap is simply a comfortable way to carry the bag.
.jpg)
before i show you the inside of this bag, let’s take a peek at the outside. as i said, the front of the bag is nothing short of brilliantly styled. it is simple and classic, making it very pleasing to the fashion eye. there is a flap that covers the front of the bag, snapping at the buckles and covering the contents inside. and if you flip the bag around to the back, you will find a deep pocket that zips, which is a great organized location for items that you may need to grab quickly, like your lens pens or extra camera batteries.
.jpg)
another thing that i just love about this bag is the open pocket on the side. it is perfect for my cell phone! and lets be real, there is nothing more frustrating that hearing your phone ring and having to dig through your entire bag to locate it before the call ends. we have all had to do that and we have all hated it. now, by slipping my phone into the pocket on the side of the bag, i have easy and quick access to it, eliminating the anxious search for it when a call or text chimes on the phone. this little pocket is just another wonderful and well thought out detail that keeps me organized and, truthfully, very happy!
.jpg)
when you flip over the front flap of the bag, there is a separate zipped pocket inside that i just love! inside of the outer zipped area is organization at it’s finest. there are pouches for extra memory cards, slots for business cards, and places for pens. nothing makes me happier than having my stuff organized. and this front pouch is so amazing because i can place all of the items that i will need during a session in the front, leaving the main section of the bag for my camera and lenses. i can quickly grab a business card for my client, a new memory card for a new session, or a full battery for my camera. there is no need to dig through my bag when i need something quickly because everything is organized right in the front. to make this section even more perfect, it fits the small clipboard that holds my client contracts. i can honestly say that the kate bag is going to help streamline my routine at sessions because everything that i need to grab for a client is all in one perfect spot! have i talked you into this bag yet!? you need it!
.jpg)
and now for the part you have all been waiting for…let’s looks inside of the kelly moore kate bag! one of the first things i noticed was the brown interior. i am in love with it! my other two kelly moore bags {the two sues and the esther} both have purple interiors, so i was pleasantly surprised to see a beautiful brown interior that compliments the outside color. another thing that i instantly noticed was how spacious the inside of the bag is. i have enough room to put my camera body, three lenses, and a laptop inside! if i am being honest, i could probably fit even more! one thing that i really wanted out of a new camera bag was the ability to carry my laptop along with my camera and lenses. the kelly moore kate bag did not disappoint! it carries everything that i wanted it to carry and it does it in a very organized way. you all know how organized i am, so you know how happy this makes me! *{happy sigh}.
.jpg)
my kate bag went on her first photography adventure on sunday and she shined! as i was on location for a session, i was happy to have my new kate bag by my side. with the fall season being the busiest time of year for me, it is important for me to have a bag that will make being a photographer a little easier. and not only does the kelly moore kate bag keep my gear organized, but it also makes me look fabulous for fall. this is going to be such a wonderful fall season!
alright, friends! you know you want this bag. you know you need this bag. you know you deserve this bag. so just click the link for the kelly moore kate bag already and buy it! you won’t regret it! have a happy fall!
p.s. many of you know that i adore my two sues and you were surprised by my new bag! don’t worry, my two sues is still going to sessions too! but she can’t fit my laptop, so my new kate bag is really helpful when i want to bring my macbook pro along. and just like new shoes, you can never have too many camera bags!

Great review! I have the 2 Sues on gray which I love too and the Esther in Caramel which I don’t use much. I have been thinking about the Kate and now your review makes me want to purchase it!! Just out of curiosity… Which laptop do you own so I can get a feel for the size?

Too funny!! So based on your computer answer, I’m going to pick your brain a bit on computers if you don’t mind. I am a hobbyist mom photographer who volunteers as a photographer for a large flag football league. I photograph 76 teams over the course of 9 weeks and post 150-200 photos weekly. I edit on a 15 inch macbook pro that needs to be upgraded. I have never edited on a large screen so I like the idea of an iMac but often edit on the go with my laptop. Would you suggest the 13 inch with external monitor or stick with a 15 inch? I like the small size of the 13 inch but not sure if it’s too small for editing in lightroom. That’s where I’d love to hear your experience with it. For the price of a 15 inch retina, I can practically purchase an iMac and a 13 inch. Any advice would help!!

So pretty!of course I want one 🙂

I love this bag. I just bought a 70-200 lens and have no idea how I am going to carry it around. Do you think it will fit comfortably? Are you still in love with Kate??? I am always afraid that the bag is too heavy even before we load with our gear…..

many fellow photographer friends have recently been asking me if i would be willing to share my photography journey. and even though my journey as a photographer only started 9 short months ago, it has been one heck of a beautiful ride. i have learned a lot about photography. i have learned a lot about business. and i have learned a lot about myself. so grab a cup of coffee and get comfy. i am going to tell you a little story.

From Beth to Bethadilly : My Photography Journey
.jpg)
if you were to meet me one year ago, i would just be beth…without the bethadilly. i would be a book reading, shopping addict who took photos with a point and shoot camera. there i said it, last year at this time i was taking photos with a point and shoot camera, and i thought the photos i took were awesome! they weren’t. oh boy. how i laugh at myself now.
to be honest, i have always liked to take pictures. but i started clicking my camera like crazy after i got married to my mr. after the “i do’s” i went into memory-making mode. i wanted to document everything about our new life together. our first home, our first puppy, our first holidays, our travels, our second puppy, our little moments, our big moments, and everything in between. i took pictures of it all. and i still do. i have over 1,700 sleeping puppy pictures on my laptop. and i cannot delete a single one. once i organized my photos, i would print them and perfectly place them on elaborate scrapbook pages in countless albums that tell the story of our life so far.
one day, i got to thinking. and that can be dangerous. i started thinking about how happy photography made me and how much i genuinely enjoyed taking photos and capturing my everyday within the frame. i had one of those moments where i blurted out, “i think i want to be a photographer…like, for real.” and instead of laughing, my husband replied, “that is an awesome idea.” and about a week later, my first dslr was in my hands. the nikon d3200 + 2 pretty lenses.
i started a blog. because that’s what you do. you buy a camera and start a blog. i became passionate not only about photographing things, but sharing my images with others. starting a blog, even though it was only a personal one, was a very inspirational step in my photography journey.
it was after i took only 5 pictures with my new dslr that i thought, “how the heck did i ever survive with that point and shoot!?” my first dslr truly made me a whole new girl, and i liked her. i started taking my camera everywhere. i took hundreds of photos a minute and learned the magic behind all the little buttons. some of the pictures i took were amazing, some of them not so amazing. but i learned from every picture i took and my passion grew even more. even more importantly, i finally felt like i was where god wanted me to be. and that was, and still is, an amazing feeling.
six months later, i got to thinking again. and that’s when i blurted out, “i think i want to start my own photography business.” and my hubby, being the most supportive person i know, said, “you would be awesome at that!” before i knew it, the long list of business prep began. portfolio building, business license, photography website, business cards, trade name, business plan, fb page, new nikon d600… and after a lot of hard and fun work, bethadilly photography was born in september 2013. for many photographers, they had a journey with photography for awhile before becoming business owners, but for me my photography journey was just beginning.
want to know more about going into business? check out my post on how to start a photography business.
sure there have been tough times. it isn’t always easy being a business owner. but the good times are the times to remember. the times when you walk into a client’s home and your photography is beautifully displayed on their walls. the times when a client texts you right as you are leaving their session, saying they want to hire you again because you worked so well with their children. the times when a client pulls you aside and tells you how much happiness your photography has brought to them. the times when other photographers refer their clients to you because they know that you will take care of them. the holiday times when every other holiday card you receive in the mail has your photography on it. the times when someone calls you their inspiration. those are the times that keep me clicking. and inspire me more than ever.
and the hard times. well, we can’t grow and become even better people without them, can we? the hard times taught me a lot about myself and became pivotal learning milestones in my photography journey. i have learned that i am easily stressed out…and i am still learning how to deal with that stress. i am learning to be confident in my pricing. even though sessions are over for the client in 45 minutes, they still entail over 8 hours of work for the photographer. these are hours that are taken away from my family, so fairly charging is very necessary and well deserved.
and there are a lot of things that i still need to learn, including: it is okay to say no. it is okay to not run to the computer when the email dings, the email will always be there tomorrow. it is okay to take the day off and put the camera away. little breaks are well deserved and only make me an even better photographer when it is time for me to pick up the camera again.
and that is my photography journey story so far. it really is only just beginning. next year, i will look back on this post and probably laugh at how much i have grown…just as i have laughed today about the thought of using a point and shoot camera last year at this time. my goals and dreams are always changing, but the most important thing is that i keep dreaming and keep pushing myself to do even better.

Reading your story reminds me so much of my own except I have had a dslr longer and haven’t fully started a business. I own an event planning, and interior design business currently but am under way to starting my own photography business. I have been building my portfolio for months and learning as much as I can. I even took on a part time job working for a local company taking children’s photos at school and for their sports teams. This has been an amazing experience cause I have been able to learn, network and save up for new equipment, business costs. I got the Nikon D3200 too with two lenses from my hubby then got a 50mm and 70-200mm lens over the summer. Finally ended up winning a Nikon D610 and 24-85mm lens in Dec and wow have my photos improved. I am also still bad at saying no and I get stressed sometimes when I have to work, edit, take care of two kids and I always spread myself so thin, volunteering at the school and for events with my kids. I have an amazing supportive hubby who backs every passion or dream I have without him I would never be where I am today. I have grown so much the passed two years and believe that God has brought me to this cross roads cause it all feels so meant to be:). Thank you for sharing your story and love your blog, ig feed and more. You have been very inspiring and I have never been more motivated then I am presently. Everything just feels so right and I’m ready to give it my all. Keep up the amazing work and you will continue to grow:). Have a great weekend.

I think I started following you on instagram after you liked one of my photos. And I was so happy to find you! Your photos are so beautiful and show what a beautiful spirit you truly are. Thank you for sharing your journey…so far. 🙂
-
Your story along with your amazing photography skills is very inspiring. I love your following your Instagram feed. Such a crisp clan simple look. I have the Nikon d600 and love it. But I in all honestly, I don’t shoot completely manual. Usually I shoot aperture but when I panic I switch to scene mode ;( . And I don’t post the pictures online! I give them to the “clients” typically that is my family! They love them. And when I go into their homes they are hanging on the walls. They print them for Christmas cards. But when I look at them I always think, well they’re good not great. Are you self taught?
What advise would you give some one starting out? I would love to have a photography business.
Thank you for sharing your life with us. 🙂-
Hello Margie! Thank you so much for the lovely compliments! I am actually self taught and I also do not shoot in manual yet! Eeeek! It is so intimidating! But someday I will be confident in manual mode…baby steps! My advice to someone who is just beginning would be to focus on one thing at a time…choose one thing to master and focus on mastering it! Then move onto the next thing. It makes it a lot easier to learn and manage all that you will need to know. Also, do a project 365! You will be amazed at how much you will grow and your skills will develop as well!

nikki_nichephoto - Love following your IG feed and reading up on your blogs! I always find such useless information and motivation. I have just launched my photography website and hope to continue on the same path as you!
{beth} a-dilly - thanks so much! so happy to have you reading my blog and happy you are finding some inspiration!

Natalie Gessert - Thanks for sharing these blogging tips! I would love your insight on this: I am wanting to start my own photography blog but also want to get a side/part time photography business going in the near future. But it may take a while for me to get to where I feel comfortable enough to start my business (and we’re going to be relocating in the near future), would it make sense to start a blog before I get my business going or wait?
{beth} a-dilly - i think blogs are great, whether you are sharing personal work or professional work! i would say, go for it! i started my blog way before i even dreamed about going into business, and i loved it! blogs are a great place to showcase your photography and your style, and they are a great place to start! have fun starting your blog!
