Creating Client Comfort During Lifestyle Newborn Sessions

if your client is nervous when you pick up your camera, they are going to look nervous in their pictures.  and looking nervous in photographs not only makes for an awkward photo, but it creates discomfort for the audience or whomever is viewing the photograph.  creating client comfort in the moments before your session starts, and continuing to encourage comfort throughout the session, will ensure that your images reflect ease and genuine emotion.  clients who are relaxed and confident photograph so much better than clients who are nervous and unsure.

learning how to pose clients takes time and practice.  be sure to read how i learned to pose photography clients to help you get started.

Pose Them

clients are most comfortable when you tell them exactly what to do.  when we think of lifestyle newborn sessions, we think of unposed and natural photographs.  but behind these photographs, it is our job as photographers to help place our clients into flattering and photographable positions that will feature them the best within the frame.  by telling your client to just look natural, you are placing a lot of pressure on them because sometimes they don’t know what natural looks like.  i always pose my clients, then step back and allow them to naturally interact within the pose.  from the moment i tell my clients, “don’t worry, i am going to tell you exactly what to do,” i can literally see a sense of relief wash over their face.  especially from the dads.

Share Visuals

i always carry my iPad with me to help show clients poses that i will be doing with them.  sometimes, i don’t even pull my iPad out of my bag because the clients are already comfortable and confident upon arrival.  but for the clients who need a little more encouragement or who visually need to see what we are trying to achieve, i like to show them example of my photographs and say, “this is the next pose we are going to do.”  seeing a pose can really help create client comfort because they know what is expected of them and they aren’t left guessing.

Encouragement Goes A Long Way

when i take the time to encourage my clients while photographing them, i can literally see their shoulders relax and their smiles become even more natural.  encouraging my clients is as simple as saying, “you are doing perfect!”, “you are so easy to pose!”, “that’s exactly it!”, “oh gosh, this is the photo!”  when i tell my clients this and they can sense my excitement, they are encouraged that they are not only personally doing a great job, but that their photos are going to turn out amazing.  remember, your clients aren’t models.  posing isn’t natural to them, so giving them direction and encouragement is the biggest secret to creating client comfort to achieve natural looking photos.

Be Lighthearted

i am very fun and lighthearted with my clients.  i am part photographer, part comedian.  want to know my real secret to creating client comfort and getting really natural photos?  i joke around with my clients, a lot.  i say silly things and poke fun, i share funny stories and am relatable.  once my clients see that taking photos is going to include laughter and fun, they loosen up immediately and relax.

Have Them Look At One Another

when i tell my clients to look at one another, it’s not to get a photo…it is to create a reaction.  when you tell two people to look at one another, no matter how much they love one another…it is a tad awkward and gets them to laugh.  having them put their foreheads together, while looking at one another, makes them laugh even more because they can only see one eye once they focus on one another.  creating situations that will encourage honest reactions will help create client comfort and encourage your clients to relax.  in turn, you will capture moments that are full of pure honesty and joy.

Just Look At Your Baby

upon arriving at my client’s home, i tell them, “this is going to be the easiest photography session you’ve ever had.  all you have to do is look at your beautiful baby.”  and because i am a lifestyle newborn photographer who focuses on capturing genuine and natural emotion, most of my session includes just that:  looking at the baby.  once parents know they aren’t going to have to stare at my camera for the next two hours, but instead they get to adore their baby throughout our entire time together, they are instantly at ease.  for parents, it is easy to enjoy their baby because they are still taking in everything about their little one.  of course, i give my clients lots of direction, but for the most part, i just let them enjoy their new little one.

Remind Them To Breathe

some clients are at ease right away, but for others it takes a few photos before they become comfortable being in front of the camera.  for those clients who are still a little nervous, i remind them to breathe.  taking a deep breath encourages them relax their face and shoulders.  sometimes having a client focus on breathing helps them take the focus away from being in front of the camera, which can help when creating client comfort.

taking the time and being intentional when creating client comfort will not only make your session more enjoyable for your clients, but your photographs will look that much more honest because you will be working in a relaxed and natural environment.  creating client comfort also makes your clients enjoy their session more because it feels less stressful and more relaxed.  and clients will remember how you make them feel forever!  the next time it is time to update their family photos, they will remember what a great and easy experience they had with you and will be encouraged to hire you again.

are you struggling with manual mode?  be sure to check out how i finally conquered manual mode.

5 Photography Projects Every Photographer Should Do

5 Photography Projects Every Photographer Should Do | Bethadilly Photography

1.  A Day in the Life Project

a day in the life project is where you document what a typical day in your life looks like with your camera.  choose a start time and take a photo every hour for one day, telling a story of how you go about your everyday.  starting with waking up and ending after the sun goes down, photograph your daily routine, laundry and all.  this is a great photography project that will encourage you to photograph a variety of situations in a variety of light scenarios, which is a great challenge for any photographer to take.  this is a great photography project for you to do once a year, showing how your daily routine changes from year to year.

2.  A 365 Photography Project

a 365 photography project includes taking one picture every day for an entire year.  at the end of the year you will have 365 photographs that document one year of photography.  this photography project will encourage you to pick up your camera on a daily basis and document your surroundings.  by picking up your camera every day, you are bound to see your photography improve as the year goes.

do you want to tackle a 365 photography project but are worried you won’t know what to take a photo of each day?  be sure to join me in the bethadilly challenge, where i provide you with a daily photo prompt to inspire your photo each day.

3.  Letters To Your Children

the letters to your children photography project involves taking a photo of your child once a month, and writing a corresponding letter to them.  not only are you documenting your child each month with a portrait, but you are writing a letter for them to cherish forever.  in your letter you can include their current interests, what activities they were involved in that month, and memorable things they did.  don’t have young children?  write letters to your grandchildren!  tell them your hopes and dreams for them, and even share stories about when you were younger.

need a little inspiration?  check out the letters i’ve written to my little one each month.

4.  Project 52

if a 365 photography project seems a little daunting to you, try a project 52.  a project 52 involves taking one photo each week for an entire year.  while you can practice daily with your camera if you would like, you only have to conquer one photo a week and it can be of whatever you would like.

5.  One Lens, 30 Days

trying to master a new lens? try photographing only with one lens for an entire month.  daily practice does everyone a lot of good and like mama said, “practice makes perfect.”  try putting a different lens on your camera for an entire month and photograph a variety of subjects with that one lens.  not only will you learn so much about your gear, but you will learn a lot about yourself as a photographer as you portray your photography style through one lens.  trying a new lens also encourages you to see your surroundings in a new way, whether it is capturing tiny details close up with a macro lens or successfully incorporating your surroundings within the frame with a wide angle lens.

starting and completing a photography project can be very inspiring and beneficial to a photographer.  if you haven’t tried one of these projects, you should try them all at least once.  each project conquers a different skill and requires a different level of difficulty and time management that will help shape you as a photographer.  so pick one, any one, and get started today!

A Blog Jar: Why It Makes You A Better Blogger

one of the biggest reasons why bloggers struggle is because of lack of blogging ideas.  i am serious.  when a blogger feels inspired and has things to write about, they have everything they need to have a thriving blog.  but what about those times in between when we are stuck thinking about a topic?  when we feel uninspired to write?  that’s where your blog needs a blog jar.  and, let me tell you, having a blog jar is a game changer when it comes to having a successful blog.  it takes the guessing game out of thinking of topics to write about and has me inspired to sit down and simply write.

A Blog Jar : Why It Makes You A Better Blogger

A Blog Jar : Why It Makes You A Better Blogger | Bethadilly Photography

what is a blog jar?

anyone can create a blog jar in minutes and if your blog doesn’t have one, it should.  first of all, you need a jar.  second, a list of blog post topics.  third, small strips of paper.  i seriously created my blog jar in less than an hour, for around $5.00.  and it’s probably the best $5.00 i’ve invested in my blog.

a blog jar is a jar full of blog post topics.  it’s a jar that sits next to your computer and contains your inspiration.  think of it as your rainy day fund when it comes to blogging.  when you sit down and can’t think of anything to write about, you can randomly choose a topic from your blog jar and start writing.

need some blog post ideas?  check out my 100 photography blog post ideas to get you started.

having a blog jar makes you a better blogger and, in turn, makes your blog more successful.  and if you are blogging for income, makes you some bucks too!  check out how having a blog jar is beneficial to your blog.

No More Excuses

the biggest reason why bloggers don’t blog?  they don’t know what to write about.  well, now you have a whole jar of topics to choose from.  having a blog jar helps minimize that excuse of, “but what should i write about!?”  now, you can turn to your jar when you are feeling uninspired with blog topics and starting writing.

Creates Spontaneity

some of the best blog posts i’ve written have been spontaneous.  sometimes, when you think about a topic for too long…you overthink it.  by quickly choosing a topic from your jar and sitting down to write, you are giving a fresh perspective on the topic instead of overthinking it.  write what first comes to mind and what you are most passionate about with your given topic.

Encourages Blog Post Consistency

when you know you always have something to write about, you will be more consistent with your blog.  and blogs that regularly have new content and post consistently are the blogs that are most successful.  they are the blogs that readers enjoy following because they know the blog is dependable and will regularly have new information.  plus, google likes it when you post consistently.  it makes your blog more real.

You Can Always Add To It

have an idea for a blog post, but don’t want to write about it now?  add the idea to your blog jar!  trust me, there will be a day when you are in need of a blog topic and you will be glad that you regularly add ideas to your jar.

It Keeps You Inspired

inspiration is one of those things that’s addictive.  once you are inspired, you want to be inspired even more.  it’s a wonderful feeling to have and it builds upon itself.  having a blog jar keeps you, as a blogger, inspired.  in turn, this keeps your blog inspiring to others.  blogging takes practice.  it’s like a habit that you need to build.  once you begin blogging regularly, you will begin to crave blogging more because it will become easy and inspiring.

having a blog jar is something i encourage every blogger to start.  no matter where you are in your journey with blogging, it’s alway a good idea to have a place for inspiration.  a place where you can turn when you need a little boost in creativity and inspiration.  for me, a blog jar does all of that and i hope it can inspire your blog in the way that it inspires mine.

5 Tips for Balancing Social Media and Family

as mama entrepreneurs in a social media crazed world, we are given yet another thing to balance when it comes to our time.  and, if you are like me, and feel the pressure to do it all, sometimes it can seem a little much.  for me, it’s important that i put my phone down and be present.  social media will always be there, but family memories are fleeting so being present is so important.  the art of balancing social media and family can be a struggle for many people, when ultimately it doesn’t have to be.  i’ve found my ideal balance that makes me feel successful as a entrepreneur and even more successful as a mama.

i know we all love social media, i get it.  my photography business only got where it is today through social media, so i can understand it’s importance.  but just like anything in life, we need to strive to create a healthy balance between family and social media.  for many, their phones equal work.  just like we leave our desk at the end of the day, we need to leave our phones.  balancing social media and family can be a little more manageable if you incorporate these 5 habits into your life.

5 Tips for Balancing Social Media and Family

5 Tips for Balancing Social Media and Family | bethadilly photography

it’s important to know that finding a way of balancing social media and family is important, yet different for everyone.  there are some things that will work for me, that won’t work for you.  and that’s okay.  the important thing is that you are creating a balance that not only works for you, but that you are enforcing.  here are the 5 ways that i successfully balance the pull between social media and family.

1. Take the Weekends Off

the goal of my social media is to encourage my business.  that being said, i treat social media like a business and keep it monday through friday, 9:00 to 5:00.  because weekends are for family, you will very rarely see me post on the weekends.  i say rarely because, yes sometimes i post and that’s life.  especially when your baby does something ridiculously adorable that’s too good not to share.  however, i am all about saying sayonara on friday and hello again on monday.  of course there are going to be times when i need to post something important outside of this timeframe, and for those times i do my best to post quickly and not linger on social media.  being able to take the weekend off and spend time with my family is one of my biggest factors in balancing social media and family, so i say goodbye to social media.

2. Schedule Posts

again, sometimes the best audience reach is during the weekends and, for that, scheduling posts to go live over the weekend is great.  for me, social media is very much about business, and we all get called in to work a weekend sometimes, right!?  scheduling posts is a great way of balancing social media and family.  scheduling posts throughout the week to occur over the weekend, allows your social media to stay active while you are enjoying family on the weekend.

3. Know It’s Okay To Have Limits

becoming a mama has taught me about limits.  while i love to share glimpses of my life as mama, i have limits that i am comfortable with.  as parents in a social media crazed world, we have to make important decisions about how we will approach our family on social media and how we do that will look different for everyone.  find what you are comfortable sharing and share.  not comfortable sharing every piece of your life…that’s okay too.  only you can set your own limits and everyone’s limit will look different.

4. Social Media Vacations

i love taking breaks from social media, it can be really freeing.  taking a social media vacation can be for any length of time, but i usually take a break for about a week to ten days.  and if it’s during election season, maybe all of fall.  (am i right!?)  🙂  taking a break from something only makes you that much better when you return to it, plus it gives you a little time away to place your focus elsewhere.

5. Dedicate Time for Social Media

having balance means that you are equally doing multiple things and you do it harmoniously.  just like you make time for your family, make time for social media.  maybe you enjoy browsing your feed in the morning before your kids wake up, or late at night after they are fast asleep.  whatever time is best for you, dedicate yourself a set amount of time to do your posts, browse your feed, and connect with others.  for me, this tends to fall during nap time when my sweet little one is sleeping and my hubby is at work, as i find i can have a little time for social media and my business without the guilt of feeling like it is pulling me away from my family.  if your dedicated time is while your kids are with you, that’s okay too!  it’s unrealistic to think that we can only be on our phones when they are asleep, but think about how you can see limits for yourself so you can remain present.

the balance that one creates between their family and social media will not be the same for everyone, we are all on our own journeys.  but by treating social media as a part of your job, it may help you to know when it is okay to step away from it.  the important thing to remember is not to let life pass you by, memories to be made without you, or moments to be forget because you were distracted elsewhere.
