hello doll!
goodness gracious, eight months! i might as well start planning your 1st birthday party, as it will be here tomorrow. (everyone laughs, but i have given it some honest thought). every day with you seems to go faster and faster, making us suddenly at eight months. it was such an amazing month for our family and you are proving to be simply the best little girl. it seems like life isn’t much different with a baby, but only because you just fit in so well with our family. sure, our days are different now that you are here, but it seems like we can just go and do fairly effortlessly and you are happy to go along on any adventure. you’re curiosity gets the best of you, especially when shopping with mama, and you just look around and take in your surroundings with such wonderment.
this month, you took your very first airplane right back west. honey, you did amazing. mama and daddy planned and packed everything we thought we would need to keep you entertained and cozy throughout our travels and you took to flying across the country in style. even with the 3 hour time change, you transitioned well and slept wonderfully while we were on vacation. after worrying about traveling for a month beforehand, you quickly proved that i had nothing to worry about.
visiting family and friends for thanksgiving was so much fun for you and our family. for the first couple of days, you preferred to only be held by mama, as you warmed up to your new surroundings. but you quickly allowed others to cuddle and play with you and absolutely fell in love with grandma’s puppy. oh the giggles that came out of you, every time he was near! we took a few videos (thank goodness) of your happy laughter and you had everyone laughing along with you as we anxiously watched your sweet excitement over the puppy.
if your adorable fits of giggles wasn’t exciting enough, you decided to sit up for the very first time and grandma and grandpa’s house. with everyone surrounding and watching your every move, you suddenly just did it. just like that, like you knew how to do it all along. everyone was so thrilled for you, even your great grandmother! we have been waiting for you to sit up for about a month and, honestly, i think you were just waiting for the perfect audience to debut your new skill.
while surrounded by friends and family, you were baptized during our trip home. the priest who married your mama and daddy baptized you and you charmed everyone that entire day. while the priest read encouraging and beautiful words to us, you tried to grab his Bible. i think you thought it was story time and, in a very beautiful way, it was. just watching you listen intently and take in your surroundings always amazes us and we really had a wonderful baptism day that we will look back on with great memories.
you are still a swimmy fishy! each and every lesson with your baby friends is so much fun and you are getting better and better each time you hop in the pool with mama. you can easily anticipate going under water now and close your eyes and hold your breath. you really like it when mr. j puts all the rubber duckies in the pool and you have to jump in, go get them, and swim them back to the side of the pool. once you reach a ducky, you clasp it in your hands and then…chew on it as you swim back to the wall. you like to chew on everything, it is really cute. your favorite chewy is sophie. we may need to buy multiples, one for the car, one for the diaper bag, one for upstairs, one for downstairs…
your first christmas is upon us and we have been creating the most amazing memories so far. each night we read a christmas story to you before bedtime…mama bought countless christmas books for us to enjoy all throughout december. and each morning, oliver our elf comes back from the north pole to keep an eye on you throughout the day so he can report back to santa. so far, he says you are doing such a wonderful job and i think there is going to be a pretty full santa sack with your name on it. silly ollie comes back in the silliest of places. he likes to hang from the lights, sit in our wreath, hop on top of picture frames and even pretend to be a wise man in our nativity scene.
you really love staring at the beautiful christmas tree and seeing all of the lights. we had fun making your very first ornament with daddy, a clay imprint of your sweet little hand so we will always remember our first christmas with you. it hangs on our tree and it makes mama so happy! it took us a couple tries to get it perfect, you really wanted to play with the clay and would grab it between your little fingers when we tried to press your hand into it.
while mama has taken to peppermint coffees this winter, you have enjoyed some really fun new foods as well. you have now tried oatmeal, pears, prunes, potatoes, and enjoy munching on rice wafers. it is so much fun to watch you explore new foods and you are such a great eater. when you have pears, i don’t even put a bib on you because i know you won’t let a single drop get past your mouth. you love them so! the same with prunes!
we have the best schedule, you and me, and have so much fun every day. 95% of the time you sleep through the night, at about 12-13 hours straight. every once in awhile you like to wake up for some mama time, but are quick to fall back asleep. it must be when you are going through a little growth spurt and want a little snack and girl talk in the middle of the night. when you wake for the day, you are all smiles! i always hear you cooing and babbling away in your crib, telling me you are ready to get up. you are just in there talking to your toes…it is so cute.
once you get up for the day, you are awake for only about 90 minutes before you really want a morning nap. but once your morning nap is out of the way, we are free to have our fun. whether it is shopping, swimming, taking a walk, or reading stories (we are trying to read 1000 books before you go to kindergarten!), we always have so much fun together. before we know it, daddy is walking through the door at the end of the day and we get to play with him before bedtime.
life with you at eight months is all we wanted it to be. you are such a sweet little girl who charms us every day with that sweet grin and your constant excitement. you adore your puppies and sometimes even cry when they walk out of the room, but they have learned to scurry back in and you smile the instant that you see them. we are working on petting the puppies gently, instead of pulling their hair. you don’t mean to, you are still learning. but you love to reach for them as soon as they are in sight.
the year of your birth is coming to a close and we are ready to start the new year with you! there will be a lot of wonderful things in store for our family in 2017 and everything we do, we do for you. i have said it before, but it is worth repeating…we are smitten by you. sometimes, after you go to sleep, we find ourselves curled up on the couch scrolling through pictures of you, remember both the moments when you were teeny tiny and the current moments of the day. our house is full of such happy sounds and i am so blessed to wake up to such a beautiful and HAPPY family every single day.
merry christmas, darling. we love you more than you will ever know.
love,
mama

#thebethadillychallenge 365 photography challenge has taken over instagram and is now one of the most popular photography challenges that is inspiring photographers to take control of their photography and improve their photography skill, one day and photo at a time. to continue inspiring photographers to pick up their camera to document their lives and perfect their technical skill, i am excited to introduce the bethadilly 52, a weekly photography challenge that only requires photographers to take one photo per week over the course of one year. let’s get started!
The Bethadilly 52
.jpg)
>>this post contains affiliate links. thank you in advance for supporting bethadilly photography!<<
if you are a little intimidated at the idea of taking on a 365 photography project or if you’ve already completed a 365 photography project and are ready for a new and fresh project, the bethadilly 52 is for you! starting january 1st, 2017, we will take one photo per week together over the course of the year. that’s only one photo a week and, with 52 weeks in a year, you are guaranteed to pick up your camera 52 times to take 52 images, while being introduced to a wide variety of photography techniques.
and i am so excited to help you do it. the goal of the bethadilly 52 is for you to really think about your photography this year and improve your skill. your weekly prompt word will challenge you and make you think. it will encourage you to be creative and to really think about your photos. my goal is for you to really improve how you take photos and to encourage you to think about each picture you take. i don’t want your photo to be rushed, i really want you to take the week to really improve your skill with each prompt.
whether you take your weekly photo right away or wait a couple days, that’s totally up to you! some photo prompts will be easy for you, while other weekly prompts may make you think and practice. the goal is for you to take one really good photo, that you are happy with, each week. it may require you to practice a little before you take that final photo that you are completely happy with, and that’s okay! as you practice, know you are learning. and learning makes you a better photographer.
once you are happy with your photo, share it with us on instagram using the hashtag #thebethadilly52. using this hashtag will link your images up with our community and allow you to participate and network with other photographers who are taking on the bethadilly 52 challenge too!
______________________________________________________________________________
How Do I Start The Bethadilly 52?
1. pick a camera, any camera
2. use the weekly prompt to inspire your weekly photo
3. take and post your photo to instagram, using the hashtag #thebethadilly52
4. watch your photography improve throughout the year, as you learn more about photography
______________________________________________________________________________
while below you will find all 52 weekly prompt words, this project is to be completed one week at a time. to be successful with this project, only work on the current week’s prompt word and focus your time on mastering each skill one week at a time. taking pictures ahead of time for other weeks distracts you from the current week’s prompt and distracts you from focusing on the current photo. give yourself the grace of time and spend the entire week focusing on the weekly skill, before moving ahead. you will be amazed at the progress you will make with your photography when you dedicate 7 whole days to each photography skill. we have all year to complete this list and the goal is to work on it one week at a time.
need help organizing your project 52? check out what planner i will be using this year to write my weekly prompts in to help organize my photography project! being organized and efficient is half the battle of being successful with a photography project.

I’m pretty excited about this. I was planning on doing a 52 challenge and I’m excited that you have created this challenge! Will you be doing a weekly blog post regarding the photography style of the week? For example week one is documentary. Will you be sharing what makes a photo documentary photography? And is week 15 a typo?
Looking forward to 2017!
-
Happy to have you joining in! Yes, each week there were be a blog post to accompany the prompt. Week 15 is not a typo, bokeh is a photography skill that we will chat about that week!
-
oops, totally misspelled! 🙂
-
-
-
This one is for me! Thank you so much!
Can’t wait!-
yay! me too!
-
-
Very exciting! Will you be still posting a 365 for those that want more practice? Also, I think Jenelle meant you misspelled #15 😉
-
yikes, it was! ha ha. and yes, the 365 prompts are still accessible in the top menu bar.
-
-
Would love to join…am having trouble signing up as says email is not valid. I even tried different email with same message. Am I doing something wrong?
-
Hello Meghan! Sorry you were having trouble subscribing to my list, I think it may have been glitching yesterday as there were so many people trying to sign up at once. You may feel free to try again today, or in a different web browser, or email me at beth@bethadillyphotography.com and I can try and sign you up too!
-
-
Looking forward to some needed motivation! “Work” photography can drain creative juices, so I need some personal projects again. I tried some daily challenges recently but got frustrated when I couldn’t keep up, so the weekly challenge is perfect.
-
that’s awesome, so glad you are joining in!
-
-
Thanks for changing it up next year. The one picture a day was a bit too much for me. I don’t have that kind of free time (unless it’s 9:00 at night and the kids are in bed and it’s dark outside. hahaha!) Once a week, I think I can do!
-
enjoy!
-
-
I am interested in following your 52 week blog
-
welcome! you can either check back each week or sign up for my email list! enjoy!
-
-
Very excited to be joining you. I took this past year off to regroup a bit but but before that I did a project 52 4 straight years on Flickr. I am looking forward to getting used to instagram. I havent done any networking or following except for family. Will you be giving any instagram tips on ways to navigate and see what everyone else is doing?
-
hello detta! so happy you will be joining us! i won’t be giving any further tips, but you will simply use the hashtag #thebethadilly52 on your instagram images in order for your images to link up to the community. by clicking on that hashtag, you can see other images posted by others. enjoy!

I’m excited to start this challenge!

one thing i am constantly doing is setting goals in my mind, both personal and professional. the problem is, when i just think about my goals and don’t write them down, i tend to either forget about them or not fully complete them as i would really like to. until now, that is. my new secret to setting goals and actually accomplishing them? write. them. down. better yet, write them down so you can check them off. but don’t just write them down anywhere. let me share with you the very best notebook for setting goals and accomplishing them.
not sure what photography goals you should be making for yourself? be sure to read what 10 photography resolutions you should be making.

Setting Goals : How It Makes You A Better Photographer
.jpg)
when lara casey sent me her game changing powersheets for 2017 to collaborate with, i met the mailman at the door. i was so ready to take control over my goal setting and actually achieve the goals i have been putting off. once the box was open and the powersheets were in front of me, i quickly grabbed my favorite markers and a cup of coffee and took action. step 1: setting goals.
Setting Goals Makes You Think
one of my favorite things about lara casey’s powersheets is that they get you to think. and not only think, but they encourage you to motivate yourself. as i sipped my coffee, i thought about all the things i dreamed of accomplishing in the new year, both personally and professionally. with my daughter’s first birthday months away, i need to edit all of her baby pictures so i could create her baby book before she turns one. i need to finally sit down and write than eBook that i have been outlining in my head for months. i need to simplify. both life and mind, i need to simplify.
all of my goals were so beautifully different and the powersheets support that! some goals will take time, while others will quickly be accomplished. no matter the size of my goal, there was a place to organize it on the powersheets.
Setting Goals Makes You Think Big and Small
turning the page to january, i was elated to see that i could make monthly, weekly and daily goals. what a gamechanger! yes, there are some goals that i want to enforce daily (like wearing lipstick. i mean, it just makes you feel better, right!?), while other goals like blogging were realistically weekly goals instead of daily. then monthly goals, that’s easy. there are so many things that i want to do to kick off the year the right way. because the powersheets have monthly, weekly, and daily goals…it encourages me to think about my goals every single day. and when my goals are on my mind, i am more likely to accomplish them.
Setting Goals Holds Us Accountable
setting goals is something that makes us better photographers and mamas. it helps us to sit down and put ourselves first for a minute. it helps us really think about the big picture and where we want to go. setting goals and writing them down on powersheets not only brings our goals to life, but it holds us accountable. and, if you are like me, if you write something down…you really want to check it off!
.jpg)
Setting Goals Encourages Us To Put Ourselves First
when i think about setting goals, i think about the things that would make me happier with myself as a mama and myself as a photography business owner. setting goals for my photographer self helps me think about where i want to take my photography and how i want to do better. this could mean making goals to pick up my camera, edit images, take certain photography classes or tackle a photography skill by completing a photography project. the best thing about my goals is that they are mine. and they encourage me to put myself first, even if it is just for a little while as i tackle my goals.
Setting Goals Helps Us Pinpoint Our True Dreams
we all have goals in life. we all have dreams. but we all think we are just too busy to achieve them. well, we are wrong. we need to invest time in ourselves because, when we do, we are better for it. when we make goals to learn about photography or complete a photography project, we are setting aside time for us to invest in ourselves. and when we invest time in ourselves, we get better at what we are doing and are happier for it.
Setting Goals Encourages Success, Big or Small
but nobody is perfect right? that’s my favorite thing about lara casey’s powersheets. they don’t expect you to cross every single thing off of your list or to do things perfectly, but to set goals for yourself and do the very best that you can. yes, there are going to be days when i edit a bunch of photos and make my bed, but there will also be the days when the only thing i do is narrow down a title for my eBook. success is success, big or small.
one of the best things about success is that it builds onto itself. once you have the feeling of fulfillment after completing a goal, it is somewhat addicting in that you want to achieve more. for me, once i see myself crossing goals off my list as i achieve them, i am even more inspired to add additional goals to my list to complete. if goal setting is something you are struggling with, be sure to check out these amazing powersheets to help inspire setting goals and achieving them.

Thank you for the recommendation! I struggle with setting goals and sticking to them so this would be amazing. I saw they’re out of the 1 year powersheet planner. Do you think it would still be worth it to get the 6 month undated planner even though they recommend the 1 year if you’re new to it? Also, I saw prayer on your daily list…love that! And on a completely different note, I’m really looking forward to the 52 week challenge!!!
-
hey Kimberly! while i love the yearly version, i think getting the 6 month powersheets would be just as great! to me, you would at least get 6 months of progress with your goals, which would set you on a wonderful path. go for it!!

when you think about how you will photograph christmas day, keep in mind that being prepared and organized will make or break your success. by keeping these 4 things in mind as you prepare to photograph christmas day, you will help to make sure you are ready to go as soon as those little ones wake. and they always wake up so much earlier on christmas morning, don’t they? do these 4 things to make sure you are ready!
1. Prepare A Shot List
as you plan to photograph christmas day, think about what photos you really hope to capturing this year and write them down. i am serious, write them down. make a little list and place it next to your camera. writing down a shot list will help keep you organized on christmas day and reduce your stress because you won’t be scrambling for ideas and trying to remember all the moments you wish to capture. things you may want to write down on your list could be: child(ren) waking and coming down the stairs, opening a particular gift, eating christmas breakfast, a family photo in front of the tree or the floor covering with wrapping paper.

2. Photograph Ahead of Time
there are certain pictures that you may want to take ahead of time to reduce the time you spend behind the camera on christmas day. the pictures that simply contain the details of christmas, and aren’t necessarily time specific, can be taken the week before such as: the hanging stockings, the christmas tree, making cookies, etc. think about what photos you can take ahead of time to still capture the christmas season, but reduce the number of photos you take on the actual day of christmas. if you really want a photo of your children in front of the christmas tree, but know they will be overly excited and disinterested in cooperating with you on christmas day, by all means, dress them up before christmas and get the photo. trust me, you won’t care that you didn’t take it on the actual day, you will simply be happy you have it.
3. Limit Yourself To One Picture An Hour
whether it is one photo an hour or two pictures an hour, try and limit yourself so you can enjoy christmas too. after you get the photos on your shot list, try and put your camera down and only pick it up once an hour throughout the rest of the day. by only taking one photo an hour, you are allowing yourself a variety of photos throughout the day, while giving yourself some time to enjoy your family in real life instead of from behind the camera.
also, be sure to dedicate a “home” for your camera on christmas morning. this could be a coffee table or a shelf. determine a place to put your camera when it isn’t in use. doing this will allow you to grab it instantly when you need it, without scrambling to find it when the moment strikes.
4. Prepare Your Gear The Night Before
as you are setting out your christmas cookies and milk for santa, set out your gear too! christmas morning is hectic enough as it is without you having to say, “wait, i need to grab my camera!” on christmas eve, i plan to set out my tripod, my nikon d750, and my sigma 24mm f/1.4 lens, a wide angle lens to help capture more details within the frame.
as you think about how you will photograph christmas day…breathe. it is all going to be okay and your photos are going to be beautiful. let go of all your expectations of photographing the perfect photos with the perfect composition and simply focus on photographing the moment. christmas day is more about photographing the moment and documenting the time, and less about award winning photos. by all means, if you have the time to get those perfect shots, do it! but don’t let it stress you or your family.

1. You Are Struggling With A Skill
if you are struggling with a photography skill, whether it be proper exposure, focus, creating thoughtful compositions, or achieving correct white balance, starting a photography project is one of the best ways to tackle a photography struggle. photography projects are intentional and repetitive, which are two qualities that also help you to conquer a photography skill.
2. You Need To Fall In Love With Photography Again
if you are falling out of love with photography and don’t feel like picking up your camera, that is a huge sign that you need to start a photography project. photography projects provide you with inspiration and direction, which are two things that are bound to make you fall in love with photography again. sometimes we all need encouragement and motivation to be passionate about photography again and, if you start a photography project, you are bound to find both.
3. You Need To Develop Your Own Photography Style
do you feel like you are only photographing a certain way only because everyone else is? do you feel like you are just trying to mimic other photographers, but aren’t sure your style is really you? those are big signs that you have not developed your own photography style. i found and developed my photography style by starting a photography project because it encouraged me to practice often.

4. You’ve Never Done A Photography Project
if you have never done a photography project, you must! find a photography project that interests you and works for you and get going! set a goal for yourself, write it down, and conquer it. maybe you will start a photography project to document your family, to conquer a skill, or to encourage your love for photography. whatever the reason may be, start a photography project that works for you.

5. You Don’t Know When To Pick Up Your Camera
although a lot of people know they love to take pictures, they often struggle with what to take pictures of. this is because they lack that inspiration and drive that leads them to pick up their camera. if you start a photography project, you are providing yourself with the inspiration you need to pick up your camera and capture your surroundings. soon, you will learn to pick up your camera naturally instead of for your the purpose of your project. and knowing when to pick up your camera is something that is such a great feeling.
you can start a photography project at any time. it’s not like a diet where you can only start on mondays or at the new year. pick a photography project that interests you, dust of your camera, and have fun with it!
